Qualcomm Could Fix One of the Biggest Problems with PC Game Emulation on Android

Running PC games on Android devices such as smartphones, tablets and handheld consoles represents a rapidly growing sector, but it has historically been held back by the need to resort to unofficial graphics drivers to achieve stability and adequate performance.

Qualcomm seems intent on directly addressing the issue: according to the YouTube channel Geekerwan, the company is working on optimizing emulator support within its official graphics drivers, considering introducing direct compatibility with the DirectX 12 libraries.

Qualcomm Snapdragon, Is Official DirectX 12 Support Coming?

Until now, the Android gaming community has relied on software components developed by third parties, such as the well-known Turnip drivers, essential for overcoming the limitations of stock distributions and avoiding freezes or screen anomalies.

This approach often requires complex manual configurations by the user. A direct intervention by the Snapdragon chip maker would simplify the user experience, allowing the system to manage more linearly the graphical instructions generated by the translation layers used to interpret PC titles.

Promising Performance in Early Tests

The feasibility of this upgrade emerged from tests conducted by Geekerwan on a device equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6-series processor. Testing graphically demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong, the tester noted that both games ran correctly in DirectX 12 mode via a software translation layer.

The inclusion of full support for these APIs would mark a major breakthrough for Snapdragon devices, since recent flagship platforms did not have native DirectX support, a key element to ensure stability and efficiency with games originally designed for Windows.

Despite encouraging data from the tests, the details of how these new features will be distributed to the public remain to be clarified. It is not yet confirmed whether the new drivers will remain an exclusive feature for devices based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series or whether Qualcomm intends to release a software update compatible with chips already on the market.
