Samsung studies the ultimate anti-spam: blocks calls without ringing the phone

A new patent Samsung describes a system capable of blocking unwanted calls in such a radical way that it wouldn’t even generate a notification: no ring, no vibration, no entry in the missed calls log. It should be noted that this is, for now, only a patent, and it is not known if and when it will reach Galaxy smartphones.

How Samsung’s call-blocking system would work

According to what is described in the document (filed on May 6 and published on September 17), the system would intercept incoming calls at the IMS level, i.e., before the connection procedures begin.

When a call arrives, the device would compare the number with those in a blocklist stored in memory; in case of a match, it would send a rejection message directly to the operator’s network, without activating in any way a screen, a speaker, or a vibration motor.

The difference from the ‘Call Filter’ feature

The mechanism described in the patent would be different from the Call Filter function already present on Galaxy S26, which answers calls on behalf of the user and checks their reliability before forwarding them: in that case the phone still activates to manage the call, while the new system would aim to remove any activation of the device altogether.

The main advantage would therefore concern battery consumption, since the phone would not need to activate to manage the blocked call; the downside is that the user would lose any possibility of noticing a blocked call by mistake, for example from a business that uses a number different from the usual.
