iPhone Duo was supposed to have a special Apple Pencil, but Apple changed its mind

The original plans of Apple for the iPhone Duo envisioned a hardware solution different from what was shown to the public during the presentation.

Initially, the device was to include a custom-designed Apple Pencil, a project shelved due to issues that emerged shortly before mass production.

This on-the-fly change led to the adoption of the USB-C Apple Pencil, causing an inevitable delay in the availability of the feature for the end user.

iPhone Duo, Apple had designed a special stylus

From the early development stages, stylus input support was an integral part of the technical specifications of iPhone Duo. The company had designed a specific accessory for the new form factor: an Apple Pencil with dimensions smaller than the models currently on the market for tablets.

The design of this input device envisaged a magnetic latch positioned along the side hinge, guaranteeing a direct physical integration between the two products.

According to information published by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, production has, however, run into obstacles that forced the company to halt the development of the accessory, reverting to a model already known.

The problems that halted the new dedicated Apple Pencil emerged during the test phase prior to mass production.

Sources indicate that it is not yet entirely clear whether the issue resided in the design of the stylus itself or in the magnetic charging mechanism integrated into the iPhone Duo’s chassis.

Facing these difficulties, Apple decided to cancel the production of the compact variant and enable compatibility with the existing Apple Pencil equipped with a USB-C port.

This choice leaves open the possibility that the original accessory could be introduced to the market at a later date, should charging or internal component defects be definitively resolved by the development teams.

Delays in support and release timelines

The transition to the USB-C Apple Pencil has had a direct impact on software release timelines. Checking the specifications on the official site, it is evident that stylus support will not be active at the time of the smartphone’s market debut.

Because the iPhone Duo’s operating system and hardware had not been calibrated initially to communicate with iPad Pencil models, enabling it requires targeted optimization work rather than a simple code unlock.

Apple is currently engaged in developing a dedicated update and a long series of internal tests to ensure the stability of the interface. Official timelines indicate that the work will be completed over the coming months, with the actual release of the compatibility update expected in the last weeks of 2026.
