The new foldable flagships from Honor and Samsung are literally polar opposites when it comes to style. Both feature aesthetics that continue from the previous generations, but the change between them is evident.
It is impossible to declare the best design, since it is a very personal and subjective choice; however this does not prevent us from analyzing the various details. Honor Magic V6 is a model of elegance and chooses a bold approach: the design is flashy, with a large circular camera module with a golden, silver or black octagonal frame (depending on the color options).
The device arrives in four tones: White and Black represent the more classical approach, while Gold and Red play with light and materials. The red variant is characterized by a back eco-leather finish while the gold model is equipped with a fiberglass cover with a distinctive three-dimensional finish.
Moving to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, this design is also familiar. The flagship features the usual oval camera module (capsule-shaped) and a narrow, elongated form factor typical of the manufacturer’s foldables.
The Asian company’s approach is very different from Honor’s: the Chinese brand aims for elegance that catches the eye, while Samsung prefers a less flashy and more understated style. The color options convey the same sense of refined minimalism, with four tones that ooze class from every pore.
The Graphite and Cream models are the choice for those who prefer black and white, while Violet Shadow and Green Shadow are ideal to add a touch of color, but without going overboard.
Setting aside aesthetics, the two smartphones show a major difference in build quality: Magic V6 features an IP68 and IP69 waterproof chassis, while the Galaxy model caps at IP48.
Turning to the specs, both devices target the premium segment: at the helm is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from Qualcomm, with a slight edge in the Galaxy version aboard Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
With the chipset being on par, the Honor Magic V6 offers some additions that are hard to ignore, first and foremost the enormous 6,660 mAh battery. Honor is now a veteran when it comes to silicon-carbon units and over the years we have witnessed a gradual increase in capacity.
This is the first time Samsung uses a silicon-carbon battery and, in line with the brand’s usual cautious approach (a choice also shared by other flagship brands), has opted for a 5,000 mAh solution.
Another important detail concerns productivity, or rather one of the aspects related to it. Z Fold 8 Ultra continues Samsung’s new tradition: there is no S Pen support, a limitation born from the need to remove the digitizer to achieve the same ultra-thin profile.
Despite this technical note, Honor Magic V6 supports the stylus and, consequently, it is possible to write and draw with a pen on both screens (inner and outer). The thickness of the two phones is very similar, yet the Chinese company managed to avoid this compromise.
Even the camera setup shows several differences: the Honor foldable is equipped with a telephoto periscopic lens, capable of distant shots using a greater zoom. The device also includes a color temperature sensor, useful for color fidelity.
