The summer will bring the mid-year Galaxy Unpacked, and as tradition we expect the debut of the new foldables. In addition to the usual book-form model (there will also be a wide variant), the presence of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 is a given.
The clamshell foldable should not introduce upheavals, and yet in recent hours a possible twist has emerged. Samsung’s new cost-cutting strategy should foresee a dual-version approach and the return of Snapdragon chipsets on the Flip lineup.
With the current generation we have seen a shift in Samsung’s approach: the Galaxy Z Flip 7 was distributed worldwide with the Exynos 2500, setting aside Snapdragon chipsets for the first time in years. The reason is simple: push toward the proprietary SoC and contain costs – given the high price of Qualcomm’s top solutions.
This year it seems things could reverse: according to an insider, the next Galaxy Z Flip 8 should come out in two versions, with Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 for Galaxy and Exynos 2600. The reason? The memory crisis – now the hot topic when talking about the tech world – has led to higher costs for manufacturers.
Samsung’s foundries are not immune and this has led to an increase in price of Exynos chipsets; Qualcomm would have seized the opportunity to offer its flagship Snapdragon to the Korean company at a lower price.
For now it is not known in which markets each SoC will be adopted, so further details will be awaited. In the meantime this rumor should be treated as such, at least until official confirmation from Samsung.
The appointment with Z Flip 8 s would be scheduled for the 22 July in London, together with the new book-style foldables. Galaxy Z Fold 8 would be the new wide-format model, passport-like, a chunkier look but surely better suited to multitasking and ease of use. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra should be the name of the usual Fold, the narrow and elongated one (in short, the classic format of the series).
