eBay: How Authenticity Verification Works, Now Available in Italy

Bags, sneakers and luxury watches sold on eBay can pass through the hands of an expert before reaching the buyer. This is a system that helps avoid trouble with branded products: the Authenticity Verification service, already active in markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Canada, has been available in Italy since September.

eBay Authenticity Verification: how it works

The process is simple: the service is active on listings labeled with the Authenticity Verification badge. Once the purchase is completed, the seller does not ship the item to the buyer but to the authentication center in Germany, within a maximum of 3 business days.

Here the item is subjected to a multi-stage check: experts confirm that it matches the listing and documents, perform a physical inspection with dedicated technical equipment and, if the outcome is positive, attach a unique label before re-packaging it and shipping it with tracked delivery. Globally, according to eBay, the items authenticated to date exceed 15 million.

What items are covered by the service

The covered categories are luxury bags, fashion items and watches, sneakers and branded shoes, with two distinct price thresholds, always excluding shipping costs. For fashion, sneakers and bags included, the service applies starting from €200; for selected wristwatches and pocket watches, from €1,500.

The list of brands is wide: over 165 fashion brands, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Nike, Jordan and Moncler, and more than 85 for watchmaking, including Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Tudor. Above the indicated thresholds, for eligible items the verification is not optional.

Who checks the items

For fashion, bags and sneakers, the check is entrusted to eBay authentication experts, specially trained for this job. For watches, instead, eBay relies on Stoll & Co., an independent company founded in 1982 and based in Germany, whose watchmakers and technicians work in a dedicated facility.

Items that pass the verification arrive with a label equipped with a QR code, which allows you to consult the detailed information about the item from your smartphone. In the case of watches, the certificate also lists brand, model, movement type, case material, bracelet type and reference number.

Costs, timing and delivery

For eligible items the service is free for both buyers and sellers: the cost of verification is covered by eBay and the buyer pays only the shipping costs.

The verification is completed within two business days of receiving the item, while delivery generally occurs within 3 business days from shipment from the authentication center. For orders of €550 and up, a signature upon delivery is required.

If the item does not pass the check

When authenticity cannot be confirmed, or the item does not match the listing, the buyer is notified, the item is not shipped and a full refund is issued to the original payment method, while the item is returned to the seller.

There is then an intermediate case: if the item is authentic but slightly different from the description, eBay contacts the buyer with details and images. At that point you can accept it, still receiving it as “verified authenticity”, or refuse it, with return to the seller and full refund.

Returns also pass through the authentication center, which within two business days checks that the item is the same as the originally verified and in the same condition: otherwise, it is shipped back to the buyer without a refund. Purchases are also covered by eBay Buyer Protection, even in case of loss or damage during the process.

What changes for sellers

Sellers do not have to do anything: eligible items are automatically added to the program, at no cost and with no possibility of excluding them. The threshold applies to both Buy It Now listings and auctions, and an offer accepted at a lower price does not invalidate the eligibility of an item that started above the threshold. For sneakers, the service covers only models in new or used condition.

Private sellers receive a prepaid shipping label from eBay to send the item to the authentication center, up to a value of €10,000; beyond this amount, shipping must be arranged by themselves. Professional sellers can instead choose who bears the shipping costs to the center.

Where it is available and what remains excluded

To access the service, the item must be sold on eBay.it and shipped from Italy, France or Germany, while the buyer must have a delivery address within the European Union.

Some countries and territories are excluded, including Luxembourg, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus and, for Italy, Livigno, Campione d’Italia and San Marino. Notions of in-person pickup and deliveries to PO boxes are not included in the service.

Not eligible, among others, are altered or customized clothing and accessories and items paid offline, as well as smartwatches, fitness trackers and watches with engravings. eBay notes that Authenticity Verification does not constitute a legal or commercial warranty and does not include checks for manufacturing defects or, for watches, movement accuracy.
