Honor’s wide foldable goes all-in: top specs to take on Samsung and Apple

The future of smartphones foldables is in the wide format, or at least that seems to be the case: it’s a phenomenon we know well, the hype surrounding a new product launched by one of the big names in the tech scene. In this case we’re talking about Samsung and Apple, both grappling with this type of foldable.

Honor won’t be outdone, and now comes a bit more detail on what we can expect from the future device from the Chinese manufacturer. However, we’ll have to be patient since the launch is expected in several months.

New clues on Honor’s wide foldable: flagship specs and book-format, but there will be a wait

Honor Magic V6

Leaks come from the usual leaker, namely Digital Chat Station; as usual the insider doesn’t name the brand but Chinese media and enthusiasts are all pointing toward Honor’s wide foldable. Previously there was talk about this unreleased device, in a format that seems to tempt Vivo as well.

When it comes to foldables, Honor remains an institution: its flagship devices are equipped with top-tier specs, top cameras, and construction of the highest level. The final result is the latest Honor Magic V6, announced at the Barcelona MWC with an ultra-thin profile and an inner display with no visible crease.

The wide foldable won’t be any less, according to leaks: the source mentions a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship solution, the first 2 nm SoC from the chipmaker. It also clarifies the actual format, which will be “book”-style, with an internal display of about 7.6″ diagonal and an outer screen of about 5.5″.

However, we will have to wait at least until 2027: the device is expected to debut in the first half of the year.

A new foldable category

Wide foldable smartphones will be the trend of the next generation: these are devices that use a 4:3 aspect-ratio display, abandoning the classic elongated style of book-foldables in favor of a chunkier-looking form factor.

The effect is a device the size of a passport, which when opened offers the surface of a small tablet. The whole thing is more manageable and easy to grip, compact and with an experience designed for content viewing and multitasking. Just take a look at Huawei Pura X Max to understand the potential of the format.

Samsung and Apple follow suit

As with the tri-fold category, Huawei plays the role of pioneer but with limited public recognition. The fruits will be reaped by rivals, starting with Samsung: in July, in addition to the usual foldables from the Z Fold and Z Flip lines, there would also be the addition of Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.

The usual cautious approach from the Korean company is eclipsed only by Cupertino’s: finally Apple should launch its highly anticipated first foldable smartphone (by the end of the year or early 2027). iPhone Fold (or Ultra, there are doubts about the name) should make a strong entry into the wide-device sector, at least according to renders and mockups spotted so far.
