Light Flip is the clamshell phone for true nostalgia lovers

While the market continues to offer increasingly powerful and feature-rich smartphones, there are those who choose to take the opposite path. The startup Light has announced Light Flip, a new clamshell phone designed for those who want to reduce digital distractions and return to a more mindful use of technology.

The project is led by Kaiwei Tang, one of the key figures in the development of the historic Motorola Razr, and it aims to offer an essential yet refined device, targeting especially those seeking an alternative to traditional smartphones (without sacrificing build quality and style).

At the heart of the project is LightOS, an operating system developed with a precise goal: to eliminate anything that could become a distraction. The software includes only the tools deemed essential, including alarm, calendar, calculator, contacts, maps, hotspot and music player.

The experience is completely touchscreen-free: all operations are performed via the physical keyboard with support for T9 typing, in addition to modern features such as voice messages.

No external display, only a notification light

The design also follows the device’s minimalist philosophy. Inside there is a 2.8″ OLED display with a resolution of 460 x 460 pixels, while externally there is no secondary screen.

In its place, a simple notification light has been inserted, allowing quick status checks without opening the phone, further limiting superfluous interactions.

Modern hardware, but without excess

Still focusing on essentiality, Light Flip offers a “modern” specification: the device is powered by the MediaTek MT8873 chipset, paired with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, with an integrated 1,800 mAh battery.

Connectivity includes support for both 5G and 4G LTE networks (with nano SIM and eSIM), and Bluetooth 5.0. Along the edges there are a USB-C port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The phone is rated IP54 against dust and water splashes. On the back there is a 50 MP camera, while there is no selfie camera at all — a choice consistent with the device’s philosophy.

To keep costs down, Light opted for a plastic shell instead of aluminum, offering six color options: black, red, yellow, pink, navy blue and light gray.

Price and availability

Light Flip will be marketed at a price of $299 while shipments are expected to begin from April 2027. In parallel, Light will also launch the program “Flip Your Life”, with a biweekly newsletter designed to guide users in transitioning from a traditional smartphone to a phone designed to limit distractions.
