In an era when smartphones compete for attention with generative AI, foldable displays and cameras with hundreds of megapixels, HMD has decided to go in exactly the opposite direction with HMD 106 2G: a feature phone that has nothing to offer in terms of apps, internet, or artificial intelligence, and precisely for this reason it positions itself as the ultimate cure for those who want to unplug from their smartphone, at least every now and then.
HMD 106 2G mounts a small display 1.8″ LCD (with a resolution of just 160 x 120 pixels), designed for a device dedicated only to calls and messages, and is powered by an Unisoc 6533G processor paired with just 4 MB of RAM and 8 MB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 32 GB.
Numbers that, viewed through the eyes of someone used to modern smartphones, seem to come from a decade ago, but in this case they are more than enough to run S30+ OS, the lightweight operating system developed by HMD precisely to efficiently manage the basic functions of a feature phone without burdening the hardware.
On the connectivity front, HMD 106 (2026) exclusively supports 2G networks, a significant limitation given that several operators around the world have already switched off this technology.
The device does not include any camera, but it brings with it the vintage charm of the 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 4.2, and a MicroUSB port. Dual SIM support is present and also the built-in FM radio, as well as an MP3 player and the ever-present Snake preinstalled, the game that accompanied a generation of Nokia phones.
The removable 1,000 mAh battery promises up to 22 days of standby, a number that gives a good sense of what it means to free a phone from everything that normally drains its battery.
The phone is available in three colors, Dark Gray, Blue and Turquoise Green, and it also features a built-in flashlight in addition to the certification IP52, which is sufficient to protect the device from light dust and small splashes of water.
HMD 106 2G was launched in Pakistan at a price of around PKR 3,449 (approximately €10). Timings and prices for other countries remain to be confirmed, but it is likely that the device will only find space in certain markets.
