In an era when smartphones compete for attention with generative AI, foldable displays and cameras with hundreds of megapixels, HMD has decided to go in exactly the opposite direction with HMD 106 2G: a feature phone that has nothing to offer in terms of apps, internet, or artificial intelligence, and precisely for this reason it positions itself as the ultimate cure for those who want to unplug from their smartphone, at least every now and then.
HMD 106 2G: the essential specifications of a deliberately minimalist phone
HMD 106 2G mounts a small display 1.8″ LCD (with a resolution of just 160 x 120 pixels), designed for a device dedicated only to calls and messages, and is powered by an Unisoc 6533G processor paired with just 4 MB of RAM and 8 MB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 32 GB.
Numbers that, viewed through the eyes of someone used to modern smartphones, seem to come from a decade ago, but in this case they are more than enough to run S30+ OS, the lightweight operating system developed by HMD precisely to efficiently manage the basic functions of a feature phone without burdening the hardware.
Only 2G, no camera, but Snake, FM radio and 3.5mm jack
On the connectivity front, HMD 106 (2026) exclusively supports 2G networks, a significant limitation given that several operators around the world have already switched off this technology.
The device does not include any camera, but it brings with it the vintage charm of the 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 4.2, and a MicroUSB port. Dual SIM support is present and also the built-in FM radio, as well as an MP3 player and the ever-present Snake preinstalled, the game that accompanied a generation of Nokia phones.
