Galaxy Watch, GPS more precise thanks to Google: here’s what changes

Google has released a new update to Play Services that could improve GPS accuracy on Wear OS smartwatches, including Samsung’s Galaxy Watch devices.

The update is particularly useful for those who use the smartwatch during outdoor activities such as running, cycling and walking, where tracking accuracy is essential.

GPS data also passes through Google’s servers

With Google Play Services v26.31, Wear OS devices can send raw location data to Google’s servers, where it is processed to improve the overall accuracy of tracking.

This system should reduce errors and deviations in recorded routes, making distance and route measurements more reliable during outdoor workouts.

The way it works will not be identical on all the Galaxy Watch models: LTE-connected models can directly leverage cloud processing, thanks to autonomous network connectivity. Bluetooth-only devices, instead, will receive GPS improvements only after syncing with the smartphone or a Wi-Fi network, so not in real time during activity.

Other highlights of the update

Google Play Services v26.31 also introduces improvements in account management for Google and third-party apps, as well as fixes for diagnostics and the system.

The Play Store has also been updated, with a new feature for foldable devices: on foldables like Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra you will be able to open app pages directly from the rankings.

For Galaxy Watch users, however, the most significant update remains certainly the potential improvement in GPS precision during athletic activity.
