Through a globally rolled-out update on Android and iOS, the image management app Google Photos has introduced a dedicated toggle that allows disabling advanced AI processing in search.
This novelty offers the possibility to restore the traditional search system, giving people the freedom to choose the tool best suited to their needs at the moment quickly and intuitively.
Announced initially during the month of March, this feature has become available to everyone in these hours, as confirmed by a recent official statement published on the platform’s support channels.
Within the results screen, precisely at the top of the user interface, a new switch appears. On one side of the lever we find the classic search system, while on the opposite side lies the “Ask Photos” feature.
This implementation stems from the clear intent to ensure a coercion-free user experience, allowing to alternate between the two methods without having to navigate through complex system menus.
The mechanism developed to manage this coexistence is by no means rigid, but responds in real time to the type of requests formulated.
During queries based on single terms or elementary concepts, the application is able to remember the preference for the classic version even in the face of repeated attempts.
However, when the query becomes discursive or complex, such as a specific request to locate the license plate number of your car within a vast photographic archive, the software analyzes the text and automatically re-enables AI to provide a relevant result.
Once this automatic switch to “Ask Photos” has been made, the setting remains fixed in that mode until a new manual selection is made by the person in front of the screen.
The changes just introduced also interestingly affect the habits of those who have not yet activated the advanced services.
In these scenarios, the search tool continues to operate according to the usual standards, ensuring maximum operational continuity without altering the known interfaces.
Nevertheless, the new switch will still appear in the upper section of the gallery.
If activated out of curiosity, this button serves as a direct invitation: rather than instantly changing the search environment, it guides the smartphone owner to the setup and terms-acceptance procedure required to enable the service.
This is an elegant solution to encourage exploration of new features, while maintaining a gradual and entirely respectful approach to individual choices.
