Xiaomi HyperOS 4: the definitive goodbye to MIUI and a 100% proprietary architecture?

Xiaomi has decided that the time has come to get serious and cut ties with the past. For years, the company’s software carried pieces of code and infrastructures dating back to the old MIUI interface, but with the upcoming HyperOS 4 things should change definitively.

The company behind Lei Jun would intend to switch to an architecture developed entirely in-house, making the operating system much more independent and optimized. It’s not just an aesthetic refresh, but a genuine internal rebuild aimed at making the user experience smoother.

The cleanup work has already quietly started with the current version, HyperOS 3.1. Some apps we use daily, such as Weather or Gallery, have already started shedding the old MIUI-era software components. This transition phase would help lay the groundwork for the debut of HyperOS 4, scheduled for August 2026.

The release window hasn’t been officially confirmed, but there are several clues suggesting an earlier debut. Recall that the current HyperOS 3 was announced last September, in conjunction with the Xiaomi 17 series.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s team is reportedly rewriting the core parts of the system using modern programming languages such as Rust and Google’s Flutter framework. This technical choice is not random: it aims to create a modular system, where individual pieces can be updated or replaced much more easily, improving the phone’s overall stability.

One key point that will reassure many users concerns apps: despite the move toward a proprietary architecture, native Android services will remain in place. Xiaomi is aware that maintaining compatibility with apps from the Google Play Store is vital to avoid isolating its users, so the transition will be deep but not traumatic.

Xiaomi’s strategy for the future: proprietary SoCs, software and AI

So far we’ve talked only about rumors, but all this is part of a strategy that has been confirmed by the company. The idea is to have three key elements produced directly by Xiaomi work in perfect harmony: the XRING proprietary chips, a new operating system, and advanced models of artificial intelligence integrated directly into the device.

Ultimately, HyperOS 4 represents Xiaomi’s most serious attempt to move to a fully proprietary software architecture. For those who own the brand’s smartphone, this will translate into a lighter system, potentially faster updates, and a much more responsive artificial intelligence management because it’s tailored to the hardware.

However, there’s also a certain amount of skepticism: at the moment Huawei’s HarmonyOS represents the true independent OS of the Chinese mobile category and in Xiaomi’s case doubts are still many. Will it really be a proprietary operating system or will it be a version derived from Android’s code? The answer could be a middle ground, at least according to the latest rumors, but let’s wait for more tangible details.
