WhatsApp will allow you to reserve a username

The latest versions of WhatsApp Beta hide various references to the possibility of reserving a username before the debut of this feature. The renowned messaging platform will introduce a username-based system to accompany phone numbers, a feature already present for some time in Telegram and which offers greater privacy.

WhatsApp Beta will allow you to reserve a username while awaiting the official launch

The previous Android WhatsApp beta version (2.25.28.12) and the more recent one (2.25.28.14) show traces of an option to reserve a username ahead of the official launch of the new feature. This is a very useful development, as it will allow you to secure your preferred username in advance.

Currently this is a feature unearthed within the Android beta version. It has not yet been implemented but will appear in one of the upcoming updates. However the WABetaInfo team has published some images showing how it works:

  • Just open WhatsApp and then go to Settings, Profile to find the new entry;
  • Reserve username allows you to reserve a username before the final version launch.

Note that this is currently a hidden feature, discovered by WABetaInfo and that will be activated in one of the upcoming beta updates. Regarding usernames, they must adhere to certain rules set by WhatsApp:

  • they must not start with www.;
  • they must include at least one letter;
  • they must include only lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods and underscores;
  • they must not end with a domain (.com, .net and similar);
  • they must not start or end with a dot;
  • they must have a length between 3 and 30 characters.
