iPhone Ultra 2 is almost certain, but the ultra-slim one just doesn’t convince

With September approaching, rumors about Apple’s first foldable are becoming more intense, indeed could be described as bolder. This time they even talk about the future of the lineup: according to a well-known Chinese insider, Cupertino has already internally confirmed iPhone Ultra 2.

In practice the first chapter would not have been announced yet, but the company is expected to create its successor — it would be certain from now on. The reason is not clear but it is likely related to extreme confidence in the foldable format, and the rumor whispers of a strong uncertainty around the future iPhone Air 3.

The latest rumors come from Digital Chat Station, an Asian insider whom we have come to know well. The leaker does not go too far, limiting themselves to stating that for Apple the next iPhone Ultra 2 would already be a certainty: a bit like when a TV powerhouse confirms the second season of a series before the air date of the first season.

The latest rumors align with those from the past few days, from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. The second foldable chapter would be expected already during 2027 and could become a fixed presence in Apple’s annual lineup. However do not expect display upheavals on the display side; on the contrary, it seems Cupertino will use the same exact panel as the first generation.

Waiting for the debut of iPhone Ultra — scheduled for September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series — here is a recap of the specifications based on leaks so far.

Uncertainty around iPhone Air 3

The news continues and looks toward the future of Apple’s ultra-thin line. The next iPhone Air 2 has been at the center of internal debate, at least according to the leaks. If on one hand the company would have full confidence in the foldable lineup, the same would not hold for the Air family.

The first iPhone Air was a flop, most likely due to the unfavorable quality/price ratio: sold at a price close to that of the Pro models, the device presents some technical characteristics inferior to them. The ultra-thin design proved futile, with a chassis of only 5.6 mm.

Nevertheless, Cupertino should announce a new model in the course of the first quarter of 2027, introducing some improvements (between cameras, battery and chipset).

However, the development of iPhone Air 3 would not yet have started: if on the iPhone Ultra side, Apple seems confident in the foldable’s capabilities, the ultra-thin category would not convince fully. The fate of the third chapter would depend entirely on the results of the next device in sight.

If sales were not satisfactory, it’s likely the American company will put this category of smartphones to rest.
