WhatsApp is getting ready to change, and in the latest beta versions new details about how it could be organized have emerged. Among the developments there is one intended to avoid forgetting any important anniversary: the birthday reminder (already spotted in July on Android in beta), now also appearing on iOS and this time we can take a closer look at the new interface.
WhatsApp and the birthday reminder: here’s how it would work
In the iOS beta 26.38.10.18, distributed via TestFlight, a feature emerged that highlights the birthdays of your contacts. On the day of the anniversary, under the person’s name would appear a cake emoji and a label that reminds you of the birthday (“Birthday today” in the English version).
The reminder would remain visible throughout the day, without interrupting the user: it would appear when opening the section dedicated to contacts, leaving the person viewing it the option to send birthday wishes.
WhatsApp would not require you to manually enter the dates within the app, but would read birthdays stored in the phone’s contacts. So the novelty concerns only the dates already registered in the device’s Contacts app.
A new Contacts tab in place of Updates
The reminder would be integrated into the new Contacts tab, already surfaced in beta 26.26.10.16, which would show who is online, who has been recently active and, of course, who has birthdays. According to what emerged, this section would take the place of the Updates tab once statuses and channels are moved to the Chat tab.
The feature is still under development and for now it is not available even to beta testers (so we’ll have to wait).
