Galaxy S27 Ultra: a return to Exynos after five years of absence?

Since the Galaxy S22 Ultra, every Galaxy S Ultra launched by Samsung has used Snapdragon chips exclusively, following the disappointing performance of the Exynos 2200 on that very model.

A five-year drought that, according to a cautious report from a South Korean media outlet, could end with the Galaxy S27 Ultra: for the first time since 2022, part of the Ultra lineup could return to using an Exynos chip.

Galaxy S27 Ultra and Exynos 2700: what would emerge from the report

At the center of the rumor is Exynos 2700, which would be built on Samsung Foundry’s second-generation 2-nanometer (SF2P) node, with a Side-by-Side (SbS) packaging designed to improve cooling and efficiency.

The chip would have a 10-core CPU and a Xclipse 970 GPU, with support for LPDDR6 memory and storage UFS 5.0. Also according to the report, recent internal tests would be giving Samsung growing confidence that Exynos 2700 could be faster and more efficient than the Snapdragon counterpart, but this is not a confirmed fact (for now we are dealing only with rumors).

Not all markets would receive the same chip

However, the report also describes a possible differentiated distribution strategy: Galaxy S27 Ultra with Exynos 2700 would be reserved for a limited number of markets, particularly South Korea, while the base models Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ would mount Exynos in the majority of international markets.

The United States and other selected regions would instead continue to receive Snapdragon-only variants, in line with Samsung’s strategy already adopted in recent years. It should be noted that the entire story stems from a report, so it’s wise to take everything with caution.
