More than seven years after the debut of the first Samsung Galaxy Fold on the market, Apple has done it, announced its first foldable smartphone: iPhone Duo is what many fans have been waiting for.
Judging by the presentation, still in progress, it is the software that is the real revolution for this new foldable model. It has been redesigned in every aspect by the Californian company, so much so that iOS doesn’t even seem like the same system as the traditional models.
The design of iPhone Duo focuses on a compact and manageable form factor for everyday use. The external display is a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR panel that offers 90% of the visual surface of an iPhone 18 Pro, while the internal one reaches 7.6 inches, 50% larger than the area of an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both displays maintain the same aspect ratio to ensure visual continuity, boast a peak brightness of 3,000 nits outdoors and support the technology ProMotion with the Always On feature.
The company has developed a special nano-texture finish for the inner foldable panel, designed to reduce reflections and make the central crease much less visible. The frame is made of mirror-polished grade-5 titanium, internally reinforced with ceramic fibers, thus ensuring the IP68 certification against dust and water.
The protection of the smartphone is entrusted to the Ceramic Shield on the back and the Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, able to offer scratch resistance three times higher than the previous generation.
Under the hood runs the processor A20 Pro, equipped with a thermal system that uses a customized vapor chamber to dissipate heat during the most demanding sessions.
The operating system iOS 27 has been redesigned to function with the new form factor. The lock screen controls, the Dock and the Dynamic Island have been repositioned vertically to the side, freeing up valuable space for content.
Users can take advantage of the Split View feature to side-by-side two applications, or place the device on a flat surface to activate the StandBy mode, available on both screens even when the phone is not charging.
Additionally, since there are no conventional cameras for Face ID, the side button includes a Touch ID sensor for biometric authentication, allowing also the addition of multiple fingerprints.
The internal architecture houses a dual-battery system that ensures up to 31 hours of video playback via the inner screen and up to 44 hours using only the outer one.
In terms of connectivity, the smartphone completely abandons the physical slot, supporting exclusively eSIMs globally and it is equipped with the new N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, in addition to the C2 cellular modem.
iPhone Duo will be available in the colors Star White and Night Sky, with a starting price set at $1,999 for memory configurations that go up to 2 TB.
Preorders will start Friday, October 16, with general availability expected for the following Friday, October 23.
