Galaxy S27 Ultra with variable aperture? The cold shower arrives

There have long been rumors about details related to the Galaxy S27 series. One of the most interesting rumors suggested the return of the variable aperture camera, at least for the higher-end Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra models.

However a recent report denies this reconstruction, but not completely: the feature was actually under consideration, but Samsung would have opted for a definitive cut.

According to the source, the Asian giant would have tested cameras with variable aperture, with solutions produced by MCNEX and Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

Yet things would not have gone as hoped and the answer is simpler than one might think. Based on tests, Samsung concluded that the improvements in photo quality would be minimal and do not justify the higher production costs and the impact on design.

In addition to raising the cost, the new camera system would have affected the dimensions (with greater thickness). Consequently, given the limited performance benefits, the variable aperture would have been abandoned.

What we know about the new flagships: leaks so far

Galaxy S27

The upcoming Galaxy S27 should once again represent the entry point of the series, but the most recent leaks do not foresee a revolution. Samsung would be testing a new main sensor of 50 MP, potentially supplied by Sony instead of a ISOCELL solution, accompanied by a 12 MP ultra-wide and a telephoto lens not yet defined.

Among the novelties there would also be the adoption of silicon-carbon batteries, although for the base model reliable data on capacity have not yet emerged.

Samsung would also be evaluating third-party components for the display, primarily to contain costs. On the hardware front, a new high-end SoC is expected, with Exynos 2700 indicated among possibilities for several markets.

Galaxy S27+

The situation for Galaxy S27+ looks very similar to the standard model. Here too we talk about a 50 MP main camera with a new sensor, a 12 MP ultra-wide and a telephoto lens, but no definite details on resolution and zoom.

Samsung would also be testing silicon-carbon batteries for the S27+, a technology that would allow increasing energy density without necessarily enlarging the smartphone.

At the moment, however, no precise increase in capacity has emerged. As with the S27, display components from external manufacturers could be used, while Pro and Ultra would keep more premium Samsung components.

Galaxy S27 Pro

The big novelty of the generation should be the Galaxy S27 Pro, a new member of the family identified with the code SM-S957B for the European variant.

Leaks talk of a main camera of 200 MP and a 50 MP Sony IMX855 ultra-wide. The information about the telephoto lens has changed: initially they spoke of a 50 MP, while a more recent rumor indicates a 12 MP sensor with 3x optical zoom. On the front there would be a 16 MP selfie camera with autofocus and possible OIS.

The battery would have a typical capacity of around 5,200 mAh. For the chip, recent rumors also indicate a Snapdragon variant destined for Europe, so the previous hypothesis of a global Exynos 2700 remains far from definitive.

Galaxy S27 Ultra

It is on the Ultra that the most significant changes are concentrated. Samsung would be preparing a new main sensor ISOCELL HP6 200 MP and about 1/1,3″, potentially equipped with LOFIC technology, while the ultra-wide should move to the Sony IMX855 50 MP.

The zoom setup remains unclear: leaks indicate a 50 MP telephoto with 5x zoom, but Samsung could remove or modify the second tele. A 16 MP selfie camera with autofocus and OIS has emerged.

One of the more concrete novelties concerns the battery: 5,534 mAh nominal, which Samsung could market as 5,700 mAh, probably with silicon-carbon technology.

On the performance front the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (For Galaxy, of course) is expected, with significant improvements especially for the GPU. The rumors about the variable-aperture camera, instead, seem to have definitively faded – as we saw inside the article.
