Samsung is preparing for the debut of the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra during the highly anticipated Unpacked event, which is scheduled to take place in London on July 22. One of the most significant innovations, and perhaps the most anticipated ever, concerns achieving an internal display that is practically crease-free.
This is a milestone that, according to the latest leaks from the Ice Universe leaker, was made possible thanks to a radical redesign of the hinge mechanism compared to what was seen on the previous Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The elimination of the crease certainly has an aesthetic impact, and yet it is not an intervention without consequences from a practicality standpoint. To achieve a surface as smooth as OPPO Find N6, Samsung had to implement an opening and closing action described as much more pronounced and decisive.
A structural change that entails a significant sacrifice in terms of versatility: the new system would no longer allow keeping the smartphone open with ease at any angle, as happened with previous models.
From a user experience perspective, this means that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and its Ultra variant may not be as easy to position at half-open to take advantage of features like video calls or viewing content in Flex mode.
Although not entirely clear yet, it is likely that the device may stabilize only at some predefined positions, making use at specific angles chosen by the user more difficult. A technical compromise necessary to achieve the panel’s perfection, now the main battleground (especially ahead of the arrival of a foldable model branded Apple).
