Motorola Edge 70 Max: The company clarifies its update policy

Last week Motorola introduced the new Edge 70 Max, its first smartphone equipped with magnetic charging support. An interesting device from every point of view but with one limitation: an update policy that is unclear and confusing, with the official site reporting conflicting indications.

It would appear this was an error, and now a communication from Motorola sets the record straight and clarifies how many updates the new Edge series smartphone will actually receive.

Looking at the official Italian site — via the image above — you can notice how the same page presents information in contrast with one another. In the Motorola Edge 70 Max technical sheet it states that the phone will receive up to 3 years of Android operating system updates and up to 5 years of security patches.

However, in the notes at the bottom of the page, the OS update years drop to 2, with 3 years dedicated to security. Motorola has never been renowned for its update policy, often confusing and seemingly changing depending on the model. Not to mention the attempts to circumvent the 5-year updates obligation in Europe.

Anyway the company has issued a statement, clarifying once and for all the update policy for the new Max model.

“We can confirm that Edge 70 Max will arrive with up to 3 operating system updates and up to 5 years of security updates (SMR). Lenovo and Motorola Mobility are committed to respecting the principles set forth by Lot X regulation and will continue to provide security, corrective and functional updates for their smartphones and tablets, helping ensure longevity and proper operation of the products.“

The company is also working to further improve the durability of its devices through more advanced policies regarding repairability and operating system updates, including those related to security, corrective and functional updates.“

As of this writing the Italian site has not been corrected; indeed even Motorola’s official updates portal continues to report 3 years of security patches instead of 5.
