Warning: Instagram blocks your account if you use Meta Glasses to film covertly

Instagram has decided to intervene firmly against a worrying trend: the spread of videos filmed without people knowing through the smart glasses from Meta.

Adam Mosseri, head of the social platform, publicly announced that content that exploits and harasses strangers in public spaces will be removed and those responsible sanctioned.

The measure aims to curb the publication of bad-taste pranks and unwanted approaches, protecting the privacy and peace of citizens who are on the street or at work.

Instagram and Meta Glasses: the crackdown on harassing behaviors

The platform’s severity comes in response to the proliferation of controversial clips in which content creators use wearable devices to record victims’ reactions without their explicit consent.

Often the targets are store employees or restaurant workers, subjected to troublesome situations or outright harassment.

Another particularly critical line concerns the so-called seduction experts, who film their approaches with women inside gyms or on the streets. The people involved, in most cases, face moments of great embarrassment because they do not realize they are being filmed by a hidden device embedded in the frame.

The company’s response did not keep us waiting: a spokesperson confirmed the deactivation of two major profiles associated with these practices.

Both removed accounts boasted a following of over one million followers, a fact that underscores the intent to strongly punish those who violate the rules.

Protection of Image and Privacy

To flag the recording activity, Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses are equipped with a small light indicator. However, the presence of this signal has not proven sufficient to guarantee complete transparency.

On earlier models, several users had found ways to tamper with the system, covering the indicator with adhesive tape or making holes to disable it.

The company sought to curb the phenomenon by introducing a software update that prevents the camera from functioning if the sensor is obscured. Despite this protective intervention, the visual signal remains very discreet and easily ignored. Outdoors and in strong sunlight, a small LED placed at the corner of the glasses does not provide a clear warning to passersby.

It is indeed very common to converse with a person wearing the device without realizing that recording is underway.

The motivations behind this zero-tolerance policy also lie in the need to defend the product’s reputation.

On social networks a troubling nickname was spreading that labeled the device as a means for vile people, a reputational damage that the company aims to curb as soon as possible.

Although the exact contours of the guidelines and the specific modalities of application have not been detailed by the company, removing content created by those who profit from unscrupulous tactics represents an important step. Punishing severely those who generate views by invading others’ spaces is a necessary action to ensure healthier digital environments and safeguard the public.
