Snapdragon Reality Elite is the chip designed for the future of XR, and XREAL will be the first company to use it

On the occasion of the Augmented World Expo 2026, Qualcomm unveiled its new hardware strategy dedicated to mixed reality and extended reality.

The American company does not stop at providing processors, but positions itself as a full supplier for manufacturers of devices based on Android XR.

The two main announcements concern platforms designed to support increasingly complex virtual experiences and to concretely facilitate the work of engineers.

On the one hand there is a high-end hardware component designed for next-generation headsets, and on the other a suite of software and design tools to accelerate the market arrival of intelligent wearable devices.

The real protagonist of these announcements is the SoC Snapdragon Reality Elite that replaces the previous Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2.

Performance makes a notable leap forward in every respect. The specifications confirm a 60% improvement in graphics rendering and a 30% increase in raw CPU compute power.

The most technologically relevant aspect, however, concerns AI capabilities, which reach 48 TOPS thanks to the new integrated NPU. This enormous amount of local compute enables managing virtual assistants directly on the device in real time, processing avatars with photorealistic quality and powering advanced tools for creating three-dimensional content.

The processor analyzes contextual information from the surrounding environment in fractions of a second, allowing digital elements to integrate with extreme naturalness into the physical world. The addition of a specific module called Engine for Visual Analytics also speeds up the complex tasks of artificial vision, improving depth estimation and refining the tracking of head and hand movements.

On the purely visual front, the architecture supports displays with a resolution that reaches 4.4K per eye at 90 frames per second, while also ensuring low-latency external video transmission.

Absolute performance is not, however, the only element on which designers focused. The autonomy and the thermal management remain critical factors for any wearable device for prolonged use.

According to data provided by the company, the new system guarantees over 20% higher autonomy than its predecessor. At the same time, the operating temperature at full load drops by 12°C. These characteristics make it extremely versatile and suitable for different types of hardware, from classic standalone headsets to wired solutions.

The first manufacturer to benefit from this architecture will be XREAL, which will use the new chip for its upcoming and highly anticipated device called Project Aura.

Simplifying development with the START initiative

To accompany the release of the main hardware, Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon START program, acronym for Scalable Turnkey AI-Ready Toolkit.

This initiative is aimed at lowering the complex barriers that companies have to face when they embark on creating smart glasses.

The package offers pre-assembled physical modules, software infrastructures, tools for connecting to cloud services, and base designs already ready to be customized.

Whether it’s glasses with audio-only features, wearables with small integrated displays, or completely novel gadgets, the California-based company provides all the technical foundations needed even before the actual development phase begins.
