Apple Watch loses a historic feature with watchOS 27

The release of the first developer beta for watchOS 27 has brought with it an unexpected discovery for users of the Apple ecosystem.

Without any official announcement, the Walkie-Talkie application has mysteriously disappeared from both the general list of apps and from the Control Center of the Apple Watch

This removal immediately drew attention, signaling the probable end of a communication option that has accompanied users for quite some time. Currently, those testing the new operating system notice the absolute absence of the software and the lack of any option to reinstall it.

The debut of this tool dates back to 2018, when the Cupertino company first integrated it into watchOS 5. The mechanism at its core was as simple as it was fascinating: pressing a button on the wrist screen, it became possible to send instant voice messages to other Apple Watch owners.

Leveraging the audio infrastructure of FaceTime, the system operated smoothly via both a Wi-Fi connection and through the cellular networks.

Unlike traditional radio devices, the range was unlimited, allowing you to chat with contacts on the other side of the world without having to pull the iPhone out of your pocket.

Despite high initial expectations, the parent company paid very little attention to the development of this interface, leaving it devoid of significant updates for eight versions of the OS.

Technical drawbacks and little interest

The life of this application hasn’t been free of obstacles. Shortly after its debut on the market, the Californian company was forced to temporarily disable the service. The triggering cause was the identification of a severe security vulnerability.

The bug would theoretically allow a malicious actor to listen to ambient audio from another user’s microphone without any explicit consent.

Although the issue was promptly resolved through the watchOS 5.3 update, the incident undermined consumer trust. The episode cooled the mood and contributed to dampening enthusiasm for a feature that, over time, has been increasingly ignored in daily use.

What to expect this fall

The development cycle of watchOS 27 is still in its embryonic stages. Technically, there exists a remote possibility that engineers decide to reinstate the application before the final version reaches the public.

However, given the complete absence of maintenance and the indifference shown in recent years, the cancellation appears to be a deliberate and discreet retirement, rather than a simple programming slip.

Users interested in trying the software’s new features will be able to access the public beta starting from the next month. The official launch is instead expected for the autumn season, almost certainly in conjunction with the unveiling of the new generation of smartwatches.
