Apple officially unveiled macOS 27 Golden Gate, the upcoming software update for Mac computers. The chosen name continues the tradition tied to California’s iconic places, but the real substance of the update lies in a conservative approach and focused on consolidating the foundations of the system.
After the aesthetic changes introduced last year, the company has focused on optimizing the user experience and the deep integration of its artificial intelligence architecture.
The update brings with it the new Siri AI, tangible improvements to system applications, new options for child safety, and a series of aesthetic tweaks aimed at improving overall readability and performance.
The focus of this iteration is represented by Siri AI, a completely redesigned assistant now callable directly via Spotlight.
Unlike previous versions, this tool is designed to process complex questions and sustain natural conversations, able to analyze personal context by drawing from messages or emails and retrieve up-to-date information directly from the web.
The assistant is accompanied by a dedicated application capable of syncing the interaction history via iCloud across the user’s devices.
On Mac, the Visual Intelligence feature also debuts, allowing you to select screen elements, such as images or textual documents, to subject them to AI analysis via a quick shortcut.
At the system level, the new generative capabilities offer built-in tools for proofreading, rewriting texts, and automatically naming files and folders based on their content.
Processing occurs locally on the device or, when greater computing power is required, via the Private Cloud Compute servers, an infrastructure designed not to retain personal data and to be auditable by independent security researchers.
The default applications receive a significant functional update. Safari introduces automatic tab grouping by topic and a notification feature capable of monitoring web pages to report price changes or product restocking.
The browser also enables generation of custom extensions starting from a simple textual description provided by the user.
Regarding communication management, Mail and Messages offer suggested responses that imitate the sender’s writing style, while also improving the effectiveness of the internal search engine to prioritize the most relevant results.
The Photos app gains tools for extending image borders, removing large unwanted objects, and a reframing system to modify the composition of shots in post-processing.
On the aesthetic front, the company has responded to technical criticisms aimed at the Liquid Glass interface introduced with version 26.
The developers have added customization options that allow adjusting the transparency effect, from a crystal-clear level to a more opaque and colorful one, significantly increasing contrast and overall readability.
The toolbars appear unified, while the menu bar icons and the rounded corners of the windows have been refined to achieve a cleaner, more orderly appearance, eliminating the floating effect of the sidebars.
These graphical tweaks are accompanied by performance optimizations that include network transfers and a faster AirDrop and a quicker Safari startup.
Native support for ultrawide displays with 5K resolution at 120Hz is also introduced, paired with more reliable window placement in the event of external monitor disconnection.
The release of this update marks the complete end of support for Intel processors and for the translation layer Rosetta 2, the software that until today allowed the execution of older applications. The new operating system will be installable exclusively on machines equipped with Apple Silicon chips.
This also means that old applications compiled for Intel CPUs will no longer work unless updated by the developers.
The update is supported on the recent MacBook Neo equipped with the 2026 A18 Pro chip, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro released from 2020 onward, the iMac introduced starting from 2021, the Mac mini from 2020, the Mac Studio from 2022 and the Mac Pro from 2023.
All older models based on the x86 architecture remain excluded, and will receive only security patches for older operating systems until September 2028.
It should also be noted that the execution of some of the more advanced functions of Siri AI will require stricter hardware requirements, limiting access to Macs that have at least an M3 processor paired with 12 GB of unified memory.
The company has outlined a clear roadmap for the rollout of the new operating system. The first Beta destined exclusively for developers enrolled in the appropriate program is already available in conjunction with the WWDC 2026 presentation, which took place yesterday.
To this initial test phase, typically characterized by suboptimal stability and intended for programming work, will be followed by the release of a public Beta scheduled for the month of July. This intermediate step will allow a larger number of users to try in advance the new features introduced.
Finally, after several months of refinement and optimization, the final and stable version of macOS 27 will be distributed for free to all compatible Mac owners during the autumn season, likely around mid-September 2026, following the traditional release timing.
Downloading and installing the macOS 27 Beta requires direct access to the Mac’s System Settings. Interested users should go to the General section dedicated to the Software Update of their computer.
Once inside this screen, you need to click on the information icon located next to the entry related to Beta updates.
Using the dropdown menu that appears in the upper-right corner of the window, you must select the specific profile for the macOS Golden Gate developer beta and then confirm the operation.
At this point the system will verify the package’s availability and allow you to start the download and the subsequent installation.
As this is development software, prone to instability, excessive battery drain, and potential critical incompatibilities with third-party programs, it is vital to perform a full backup of your data via Time Machine before starting the process, avoiding installation on your primary work computer.
