Do you miss the old Facebook built by people? Meta launches a new app

In recent years, social networks have gradually transformed into spaces dominated by recommendation algorithms and endless streams of suggested content.

In this context of a constant drift away from personal interactions, many users miss authentic discussions.

To address this precise need in a completely discreet manner, without press releases or pompous announcements, Meta quietly introduced a new application. Discovered by industry expert Matt Navarra, the platform is called Forum and aims to offer a space entirely dedicated to the most meaningful conversations.

Unlike the main Facebook feed, which chaotically mixes friends’ posts, updates from followed pages and content randomly selected by the system, Forum focuses exclusively on the Groups ecosystem.

The idea behind the project is to provide concrete answers written by real people, placing the service halfway between Reddit’s discussion dynamics and the questions-and-answers model typical of Quora.

Upon first login, users are asked to select their topics of interest, allowing the app to show discussions from the communities they already belong to, paired with targeted suggestions.

Everything published on Forum also appears instantly on the main Facebook app and vice versa, ensuring a seamless continuity in the user experience.

To access Forum, you must have an active Facebook account. Your credentials and past activities are automatically transferred into the new digital environment as soon as you log in.

Although there is the possibility of adopting partially masked usernames to participate in discussions, it is not a platform designed for total anonymity, as the administrators of individual communities will always have the ability to view the real identities of participants.

It’s not the first time that Meta, the company based in Menlo Park, has tried a group-focused app, given that a similar experiment was launched and later closed in 2017.

Integration and ongoing testing

While aiming at human and real interaction, the tech giant has decided to integrate two specific features based on artificial intelligence.

The first of these is called Ask and acts as an internal aggregator capable of sifting through the various communities to gather the answers to users’ questions, saving them the effort of scouring individual groups for specific information.

The second innovation concerns directly the managers of the virtual spaces, who can use an AI assistant to facilitate content moderation operations.

Currently, the application is downloadable for free for iPhone owners, but it is confined to a limited number of international markets.

Company spokespeople have confirmed to the press that the product is still in an experimental phase, noting that numerous projects are constantly tested to evaluate which tools are truly useful to users.
