iPhone 18 Pro, is this the first official image?

Since it debuted in 2022 on the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, the Dynamic Island has remained substantially unchanged in terms of aesthetics and dimensions.

However, rumors regarding the next moves of Apple have been buzzing for months, focusing in particular on the measurements of the front cutout of the future iPhone 18 Pro.

Recently, the debate has heated up further thanks to an image leaked online, capable of providing a first and interesting perspective on what the device might look like.

iPhone 18 Pro shows a smaller Dynamic Island

The well-known social media account known as “Early Apple” (@earlyappleleaks) has in fact released a shot that partially shows the front profile of the smartphone.

Although it is highly unlikely that this is the photograph of a real unit and final, leaning more toward the theory of an accurate mockup, the source states that the publication of such a shot occurred due to a mere error.

Regardless of the true origin of the media file, the surfaced material represents a further clue toward a clear stylistic direction: the noted interactive island will shrink considerably, occupying a noticeably smaller portion of the screen than in previous generations.

Estimates of the new screen dimensions

Even if one wanted to set aside the recent image as unreliable, the evidence supporting a more compact front cutout continues to accumulate with impressive consistency. Measurements taken directly on some non-working physical models suggest that the notch will go from 20.06 mm on the iPhone 17 Pro to about 14.98 mm on the imminent iPhone 18 Pro.

According to analyses shared online by the YouTuber Vadim Yuryev, it would be a reduction of about 25% of the footprint. Other highly followed figures in the tech sector, like the well-known informant Ice Universe, push toward even more optimistic estimates, indicating a potential narrowing of the hole up to 13.5mm, equivalent to a sharp 35% cut.

This is a course correction long awaited by many consumers. While Android-based devices manufacturers have for years adopted minimal circular holes to host the front camera, Apple has continued to defend its pill-shaped module, notably larger.

This solution is undoubtedly more visually invasive, although it has been made highly interactive through ingenious software features to mitigate its impact.

The sensors dedicated to biometric recognition Face ID will not be moved entirely under the display panel during this launch cycle, which is why the top notch will not disappear entirely. However, by finally integrating the IR illuminator under the screen, engineers will be able to scale the overall footprint of the system.

Familiar shapes and the autumn launch

The aesthetic changes will not be limited exclusively to the front display. The current rumors sketch the iPhone 18 Pro as a smartphone characterized by a slightly increased overall thickness and by an even more protruding rear camera module relative to today’s standards.

On the one hand, these variations could have a slight impact on the product’s ergonomics and usability; on the other hand, the stylistic setup will maintain a completely recognizable appearance for regular users.

Such aesthetic continuity is largely predictable, considering that the last major update of the shell design occurred only during the past year; it would therefore be premature to expect further radical upheavals in such a short time.

The official unveiling of the device is expected, in keeping with company traditions, for the month of September. The late-summer event could, however, take on historic significance for technology enthusiasts: industry whispers suggest, in fact, that the new Pro model will be announced to the public in conjunction with the very first and highly anticipated foldable iPhone.
