QNAP TS-216G Review: the smart NAS with AI and ransomware protection

In the digital era we live in, piling up terabytes of data is easy: whether it’s the endless photo archive of a lifetime or the sensitive and vital documents of a small office, the old USB-connected external hard drive has had its day. Today we need a central “brain”, always connected and, above all, intelligent, and it’s precisely in this space that the QNAP TS-216G fits.

This two-bay NAS (i.e., 2 drive slots, 3.5″ or 2.5″) proposes itself as a hybrid and extremely versatile solution, designed for those seeking a meeting point between domestic and professional needs, without having to face excessive costs. QNAP has in fact decided to democratize some features that we usually find on higher-end machines, making them accessible to everyone.

Under a compact chassis with a refreshed look, the TS-216G hides hardware designed to be not only fast, thanks to future-ready network connectivity that many will have, but current for those who have already moved to fiber, and above all smart. Without revealing too much at this point, during this review we will see how this device can magically simplify the management and search of our photographic memories, and how it provides small offices with advanced security tools to shield data against any IT mishap.

Design, build and ports

Forget the classic and monotonous black “cube” that often represents the NAS in the common imagination; with the TS-216G, QNAP shifts into a different aesthetic, opting for an elegant matte white finish broken by a slim vertical black band on the front. The dimensions are decidedly compact (about 16.5 x 10 x 22 cm), not by chance a device that easily fits on a desk or a shelf without drawing attention.

The chassis is entirely plastic, and while this on one hand keeps it light, one must admit that the drive trays for extracting the disks feel a bit “light” to the touch. In any case, they do their job: the installation of standard 3.5-inch hard disks is completely tool-free, thanks to a system of side-insert clips (while for 2.5″ SSDs you will need to use the included screws). A detail much appreciated, especially for use in a small office, is the inclusion of two keys to lock the drive bays and prevent unpleasant “accidental” ejections.

Returning to the front panel, the black band hosts five essential status LEDs, the power button and a very convenient USB 3.2 Gen 1 port accompanied by the “One-Touch-Copy” button. This is a real godsend: imagine you simply connect a USB stick or an external hard drive, press the button and the NAS will automatically copy all its contents inside, without even needing to turn on the PC, run cumbersome procedures, or other hassles.

The real command center, however, is on the back. Next to the reset button, the power input and two USB 2.0 ports (perfect for connecting a UPS, USB sticks, USB HDDs and a USB expansion JBOD, as well as a mouse and keyboard), we find the real ace up this model’s sleeve: the network connectivity. In addition to the standard Gigabit LAN port, QNAP has added a 2.5 GbE Multi-Gigabit port. Little tip: on the back the ports are labeled only as “1” and “2” without speed indicators; remember that the top one is the 2.5 GbE.

To cool everything, there is a single 70 mm rear fan. The system is overall very quiet and unobtrusive in a room, although the lack of side ventilation holes slightly raises internal temperatures during more intense data transfers. Certainly, at this price some compromises are necessary: you won’t find an HDMI port to connect it directly to a TV, nor internal slots to host M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching, absences entirely justifiable for the market segment this product targets.

Having done so, the NAS needs to be discoverable on the “network”, which locally is of little use: that’s where the myQNAPcloud configuration comes into play. A feature we recommend you dedicate two minutes to. By registering a free account, you will be able to generate a personalized web link (for example: qlink.to/ilmionome), a URL that will allow you to access your QNAP TS-216G from anywhere in the world, as if you were visiting a normal website, completely bypassing the tedious and complex port forwarding configuration on the router. All of it securely, thanks to the built-in SSL certificates and the DDNS service.

A side note: do not be impatient. During the very first startup and during the initial synchronization of the disks, the system takes its time. It might take a couple of minutes before the login page responds promptly to commands.

Performance and Software

Once the initial setup is done, you are presented with the QTS 5.2 interface, QNAP’s proprietary operating system. If you know how to use a smartphone or a Windows PC, you’ll feel at home: a clean desktop, well-arranged icons, and a richly featured App Center from which you can download dozens of additional applications to customize your user experience.

Under the hood, the quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor and the 4 GB of integrated RAM do their job well, especially when leveraging the capabilities of the 2.5 GbE Multi-Gigabit network port. From our tests and collected data, the TS-216G surprises by achieving sequential write speeds approaching 273 MB/s and read speeds around 225 MB/s. In plain terms: transferring large video files (such as a 4K movie or a folder of heavy projects) happens in a flash, pushing the network bandwidth to its 2.5 GbE limit. Speeds naturally drop when transferring thousands of small files, but remain well within expectations.

We now come to one of the real highlights of this model: the integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). What is the purpose of an AI chip in a home NAS? The answer is simple: to bring order to the chaos of your photo library.

Using QNAP’s dedicated app for multimedia management (QuMagie), the NAS AI Core analyzes photos by offloading the work to the NPU rather than burdening the main processor. This means that the system is capable of recognizing faces, objects, animals, and places in a fraction of the time and without causing slowdowns during navigation in the menus. You will be able to search for “dog on the beach” or automatically filter all photos of a friend, and the NAS will return the album already prepared. It’s an incredibly useful feature for content creators like us who often find themselves searching for files among thousands of archived items, but also for families who want to centralize tens of thousands of memories captured with smartphones.

For home use, AI is the killer feature, but for small offices (or freelancers) the priority is data protection. In an era where ransomware (those viruses that encrypt files and demand a ransom) are commonplace, the TS-216G offers a defense of enterprise-level protection thanks to the Snapshot. Snapshots, also called in Italian “istantanee”, are not simple backups, but real “photographs” of the system’s state at a precise moment; even in the case of accidentally deleting a critical document, or worse, if malware encrypts the shared folder of your office, you’ll simply need to access Snapshot management and, with a couple of clicks, restore the files to the exact state they were in one hour or one day earlier, depending on how you’ve configured it. It is literally a time machine that makes the NAS invulnerable to this type of attack, ensuring business continuity and zero stress.

Prezzo e considerazioni

All in all, the QNAP TS-216G arrives on the market with a list price around €300, to which of course the cost of the hard drives will be added, which, unfortunately at this moment in time, are not exactly cheap, but I am sure that this is just a phase.

This is an extremely competitive positioning, also because at this price, getting a device with 2.5 GbE connectivity, a mature software ecosystem like QTS, the vital protection of Snapshots against ransomware, and, above all, a AI-dedicated NPU for lightning-fast photo management, is a real bargain.

Sure, you have to accept a few small compromises: there is no option to expand the RAM, there are no slots for M.2 NVMe SSDs for ultra-fast caching, and, right after startup, the system takes a few minutes to become perfectly smooth, but these are drawbacks that affect only the users power user or larger, more structured companies; for the home user, the freelancer, or the small office looking for a smart, fast personal cloud that is secure, the TS-216G currently represents one of the market’s most intelligent and on-target choices. Highly recommended.
