On the occasion of the mega event dedicated to its new top-of-the-line devices (the series Pura 90 and the wide-foldable Pura X Max), the Chinese giant has also rolled out a new pair of smart glasses. As with the new foldable, in this case too the brand has gotten ahead of its rivals: Samsung, Apple and Google are expected to launch their respective tech glasses soon, but in the meantime here come the latest Huawei AI Glasses – an interesting preview of what the future of the category could look like.
Huawei isn’t new to this field: it all started with a collaboration with Gentle Monster for its audio glasses, followed by the gaming headset VR Glass 6DoF and the Vision Glass (equipped with micro OLED displays capable of projecting a virtual screen up to 120 inches). The move to everyday glasses was only a matter of time, given the Chinese house’s experience.
The detour into headsets has proven useful for practice and to improve these technologies, but now the new battleground will be smart glasses. The first step is devices without an integrated display in the lenses, but with a look and convenience similar to traditional glasses.
The new Huawei AI Glasses are a step in this direction: more than simple audio glasses, but for now they lack an integrated display. The temples measure 6.25 mm while the total weight is just 35.5 grams, all with titanium alloy hinges developed by the same company.
Moving the whole thing is a proprietary AI chip with snappy performance: the built-in assistant is activated via voice prompts or with a simple touch and Huawei promises instant responses. The camera is equipped with a 12 MP sensor with a 1/2.8″ size, capable of taking photos with a maximum resolution of 4,096 x 3,072 pixels and recording video at 1,920 x 1,440 pixels (30 fps).
On the connectivity side we have WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 6.0 while for autonomy Huawei promises up to 12 hours of average use. Going into the details, it talks about 9 hours of music on a single charge, up to 8 hours of calls and 78 minutes of usage for live streaming. The battery is a 258 mAh unit of typical capacity, while charging takes place via a USB-C interface or magnetic contacts.
Finally, the glasses are IP54-rated against dust and splashes and the onboard software is HarmonyOS 6.0. The new Huawei AI Glasses debut in China in three versions: with optical lens and semicircular frame, with sunglasses lenses and full frame (black gradient), or with optical lens and full black frame. For price, the device launched at 2,499 yuan and 2,899 yuan (depending on model), approximately €311 and €361 at current exchange rates.
