Samsung Looks to the Future: Reaches Major Milestone in 6G Development

In addition to being a globally prominent brand in the production of smartphones and consumer electronics aimed at the general public, Samsung is historically also distinguished as a leading player in the development of network infrastructures and devices, essential elements for the proper functioning of cellular connectivity.

In this context of ongoing technological evolution, the South Korean powerhouse has recently announced a crucial step forward toward the sistemi di telecomunicazione di domani, completing with full success the verification of a complex technology that will play a vital role in the practical implementation of the standard 6G.

The need for ever faster and more capable networks constantly pushes research toward novel solutions, able to handle data traffic volumes previously unthinkable.

Samsung at Work on 6G: X-MIMO and the 7 GHz Spectrum

The notable technical achievement is based on the system named X-MIMO, acronym for eXtreme multiple-input multiple-output. Working on the 7 GHz frequency band, the engineering team managed to reach peak download speeds of 3 Gbps.

This specific frequency band is emerging as one of the strongest candidates for future 6G infrastructures, as it offers an exceptional balance between pure transmission capacity and the breadth of mobile radio coverage.

It sits exactly halfway between the mid-band spectrum of 3.5 GHz, widely used for current 5G networks, and the very high frequencies typical of millimeter waves.

To realize these performances, engineers have engineered a system of ultra-high-density antennas. This particular hardware architecture allows integrating a number of radiating elements four times higher than today’s networks, while still maintaining physical dimensions and footprints entirely comparable to those of the previous-generation equipment.

The Synergy for Field Testing

This enormous scientific and engineering progress is not the result of isolated lab work. The validation of the X-MIMO system occurred thanks to a close and fruitful technical cooperation with two premier partners, namely Keysight Technologies and KT Corporation.

Field tests were conducted within the South Korean company’s research and development campus located in Seoul.

To ensure that the data collected were not limited to optimal theoretical scenarios, the strategic partnership with KT allowed recreating a true outdoor wireless testing environment, faithfully reproducing as accurately as possible the physical conditions and interferences of a real cellular network.

During the experiment, researchers were able to precisely measure data transfer rates, transmitting eight streams simultaneously from the base station to reach a single user terminal.

The equipment used for these tests included a sophisticated 6G base station prototype featuring as many as 256 digital ports, complemented by a dedicated test bench for 6G terminals provided by Keysight.

Towards Next-Generation Communications

The fully positive outcome of the Seoul experiments outlines an extremely promising scenario for connections in the coming decade.

The infrastructures to come must therefore support ever more complex services and guarantee user experiences that are significantly higher than today.

JinGuk Jeong, Executive Vice President and head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, publicly confirmed the company’s ongoing and lasting commitment to studying advanced networking technologies.

The executive clearly highlighted how the strong collaboration established with the historic partners has allowed to concretely demonstrate the potential for substantial increases in transmission speeds.

The company thus continues to chart its course for tomorrow’s connections, working diligently to provide the solid technological foundation indispensable to support the ongoing expansion of digitalization on a global scale.
