“Gol da Rua Javari”, Pelé’s most beautiful goal becomes a video thanks to Google DeepMind

On August 2, 1959, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, for everyone simply Pelé, scored what he himself and many witnesses defined as the most spectacular goal of his entire career.

A breathtaking move, characterized by three consecutive sombreros against the defenders and the opposing goalkeeper, without the ball ever touching the ground.

Until recently, this feat lived only in the minds of those present, never having been captured on film.

Today, more than six decades later, an intensive and precise historical research effort, combined with Google DeepMind’s artificial intelligences, has allowed us to reconstruct and finally make visible to all the legendary “Gol da Rua Javari“.

The genesis of this project traces back to meticulous recovery and documentation work. The Brazilian historian Anita Lucchesi and her team examined nearly 2,000 records and documents, ranging from architectural plans to private family photo albums in the Mooca district.

To recreate the exact context, more than 3,600 images from the era were cataloged and analyzed. The process involved directly the eyewitnesses of the event, supported by a scale model of the stadium, specific diagrams and photographs to stimulate and define the memories of that afternoon in 1959.

The work was completed in close collaboration with the former star’s family, sports journalists, and the Pelé Brand. The champion’s daughter, Flávia Kurtz, expressed great emotion at the result, recalling how his father had always lamented the absence of a recording of that magical moment.

From physical action to digital generation

Translating historical information into a realistic video required a hybrid approach, starting from live shots made right on the Rua Javari stadium grass. A crew filmed the on-field actions using heavy leather balls and uniforms recreated with meticulous attention to the tailoring of the era.

These physical foundations were then developed through Google’s advanced models, specifically Veo, Gemini Omni and Nano Banana Pro.

The work focused on digitally substituting the likeness of a modern stand-in with Pelé’s face and his iconic number 10 shirt, as well as adjusting the surrounding environment to reflect the architecture and the cloudy weather of that particular day.

The atmosphere generation also took into account the audience experience, both those crowded in the stands and those listening through radio broadcasts.

The balance between athleticism and post-production

Reproducing the complex acrobatics and exceptional technical gestures of a world-class performer required the use of the Performance Control technique based on the Veo 3 model. This procedure allowed extracting the three-dimensional geometry and the exact movements of the stuntman to millimeter-precisely guide the video generation.

The workflow then combined the sequences produced by artificial intelligence with traditional visual effects, managing color balancing and the complex integration of the ball movements into the image.

To ensure an aesthetic extremely faithful to the 1950s, the final result was processed through a film-out machine, capable of returning the visual grain and texture typical of cinema footage of the era.

The entire production effort culminated in the creation of a mini-documentary that is today permanently on display at the Pelé Museum in the city of Santos, returning to enthusiasts a fragment of sporting history finally brought to light. We leave here below the video in question:
