Google has “broken” spacetime, Pixels invent a nonexistent date with Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1

Beta versions of operating systems are notoriously accompanied by software bugs of various kinds, tolerated by users in order to try the new features in advance and useful for developers to refine the code before the final release.

However, the latest release of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 has introduced a decidedly unusual anomaly on Google devices. Several testers have reported a bizarre error that alters the date displayed in the quick settings panel, projecting the smartphone into days completely nonexistent, like a phantom “0 January“.

Although it is a purely graphical issue that does not compromise the essential functionalities of the smartphone, the episode has aroused great curiosity and a certain amount of irony.

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 brings the Pixels to the ‘0 January’ date

When you install a Beta version of Android, you expect occasional slowdowns, abnormal app interruptions, or excessive battery drain. Significantly less predictable is encountering a smartphone that autonomously decides to rewrite the Gregorian calendar.

The peculiarity emerged completely by chance during normal use of a Pixel 10 Pro. Lowering the quick settings shade to four in the morning to disable dark mode, a user noticed that the real date, at that moment July 28, had suddenly transformed into “0 Jan” (0 January).

This strange behavior then manifested with several facets. At first, a simple reboot of the device was sufficient to restore the correct date. However, just 24 hours later, the software showed a new, arbitrary variation, setting the date to Wednesday, January 1.

While this second case has a more coherent reading than the absolute zero of the previous day, it is still a completely wrong reading and disconnected from reality.

Online reports and system impact

The peculiarity of the event prompted those affected to share their experience on the major online discussion platforms. On Reddit there have quickly appeared numerous reports from other Pixel owners affected by the same bug.

The sarcastic comments have multiplied, with several users who have compared their own smartphone to the famous time stream, joking about the device’s unexpected ability to travel through eras.

Fortunately, the practical impact of this defect on smartphone use is almost nil. The time shown in the main status bar continues to run accurately, maintaining correct synchronization with network servers.

Similarly, critical apps for daily organization, such as the calendar and task managers, do not suffer any alteration and continue to operate with exact data.

Therefore there is no real reason for alarm for those who rely on the smartphone to organize their commitments.

Awaiting the definitive fix

Fixing the issue in the short term requires a simple procedure: turning the smartphone off and on again clears the problem, albeit temporarily.

Given the limited consequences on overall operation, many testers simply suggest ignoring the defect and waiting for future updates.

The very nature of beta versions is to reveal and isolate these unpredictable imperfections. It is therefore highly likely that Mountain View’s engineers are already analyzing system logs to identify the exact cause of the discrepancy and that a corrective patch will be included in upcoming updates, well before Android 17 QPR2 reaches the stable channel destined for the global audience.
