Support for these Xiaomi devices has ended, but they have received a new update

All smartphones go through a lifecycle that runs from market launch to the end of updates, a path that over the years has been the subject of debate. Fortunately users have received several years of software support, with flagship devices reaching comfortably 7 years (between major updates and security patches).

Xiaomi has been in the spotlight for quite some time due to a fluctuating update policy. It must be said that the current situation has improved a lot, and now another datapoint emerges that seems to indicate Lei Jun’s company’s commitment.

In recent days some smartphones Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO that have reached the EOL phase (End of Life, i.e. the end of support) were updated unexpectedly. Of course, these are not updates that introduce new features or major changes, and yet it’s good not to underestimate them.

The updates released, in fact, resolve critical issues and improve system stability: not minor details for phones that have now reached the end of life, and their ultimate fate should be replacement by the user (or at most modding).

Anyway this is not the first time that Xiaomi releases an update for an EOL device; however, these are very rare events. The devices involved are the following:

  • Xiaomi 11i
  • Xiaomi 12
  • Xiaomi 12 Pro
  • Redmi K60e
  • Redmi Note 11 Pro+
  • POCO F4
  • POCO F4 GT

The updates in question concern the Global or Chinese firmware (or Turkish in a single case), while there are no changes for European models. Xiaomi did not specify the exact reasons that led to the release of new software. Generally, for EOL phones, this occurs in case of critical issues that affect system stability, device security, battery security, network connectivity, the risk of bootloop or abnormal app terminations.
