Sony Xperia 1 IX could change the camera (after four generations stuck at 2023)

From Xperia 1 V, launched in 2023, Sony has not touched the main camera sensor of the flagship series: the same Exmor T 1/1,35″ is found unchanged on Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 1 VII and the current Xperia 1 VIII. According to a rumor shared in the last hours this long pause could finally be broken with Xperia 1 IX, the next generation of the series.

The leak discusses a larger-size sensor than the current one, a change that would bring with it also an expansion of the rear camera island on the back of the device.

However, it remains uncertain whether the increase will affect only the height of the protrusion, its overall surface, or both dimensions.

On the face of the actual sensor, two alternative hypotheses emerge. The first is the Sony LYTIA 901 of 1/1,12″, already used on OPPO Find X9 Ultra and vivo X300 Ultra. The second is the LYTIA 910, a LOFIC 50 MP sensor in 1/1,28″: in both cases it would still be a larger unit than the one mounted on Xperia 1 VIII.

The expected benefits and other rumored specs

A larger sensor would typically lead to better noise reduction in low-light conditions and a higher dynamic range in images, two aspects where the Xperia 1 series has not shown progress in recent years precisely because of the unchanged sensor module.

Among other rumors circulating alongside the camera one, the Xperia 1 IX would mount the chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Regarding the design, there are rumors of a completely redesigned camera module to house the larger sensor.

Already the current Xperia 1 VIII has marked a look change, so we are curious to discover what the aesthetics for the next flagship will be. However, we will have to wait as the device launch is not expected before mid-2027.
