MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro costs as much as an entire smartphone

The consumer electronics sector is going through a period of strong economic tension. The ongoing cost pressures emerge at almost every stage of the production process, pushing major companies to rethink their strategies.

MediaTek is also preparing to implement significant price increases for its upcoming flagship chips. The rise is not a temporary fluctuation, but a genuine structural adjustment of the price lists that will push the new processors to reach extremely high wholesale sale prices.

Information from Taiwanese sources indicates that the company has already started to nudge upwards the price lists of some more mature components.

Now, attention shifts to the imminent flagship platforms, currently known as Dimensity 9600 and its higher-end variant Dimensity 9600 Pro.

The company currently enjoys a solid contractual position, largely supported by stock replenishment for new devices in assembly and the clear recovery in commercial demand, particularly with regard to exports to emerging markets.

However, the upward price trend does not affect the entire catalog uniformly. The push upward focuses on ultra-high-end solutions, while for base semiconductors price sensitivity remains a critical buying factor, preventing generalized and simultaneous price increases across the entire price list.

From a strictly technical point of view, rumors suggest that the Dimensity 9600 Pro will use the TSMC N2P manufacturing process. The internal architecture will be particularly aggressive and will include two ARM C2-Ultra cores, capable of reaching operating frequencies close to 5 GHz, complemented by three ARM C2-Premium cores and a further three ARM C2-Pro cores.

Completing the technical package for this version will be full compatibility with fast LPDDR6 RAM.

The standard model, the Dimensity 9600, will instead rely on the less expensive N2 node, still at TSMC’s foundries, and will support LPDDR5X RAM.

Economic Impact on Manufacturers

The Dimensity 9500 was marketed at a price between $180 and $200 per unit. This positioning guaranteed a significant economic advantage over the direct rival, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, sold to companies at around $280. This gap translated into an effective 28% discount in favor of MediaTek-branded supplies.

The projections for the upcoming generation indicate that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will easily surpass the $300 psychological barrier. Assuming the current balance of power and commercial convenience between the two semiconductor giants remains unchanged, the new Dimensity 9600 Pro could easily exceed $216 per unit.

Such an expense is decidedly emblematic: to secure the SoC alone, brands will have to shell out an amount that effectively equals the entire retail price of a modern budget smartphone.
