In July, Samsung announced Galaxy Z Fold 8, the lightest foldable in the world, weighing 201 grams. The device features a chassis 52 grams lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which remains at 253 grams. A milestone that comes at the end of a progressive weight-reduction journey started with the first Galaxy Fold in 2019.
nnnnThe very first foldable made by Samsung started at 276 grams, but the weight has fallen across generations, reaching 253 grams with the Z Fold 5, 239 grams with the Z Fold 6 and 215 grams with the Z Fold 7. The result comes from work on the materials of the device’s internal and external structure. Samsung has introduced the technology Flex Titanium, based on a titanium alloy film about 33 micrometers thick, roughly a third the diameter of a human hair.
nnnnCompleting the structure are the Advanced Armor Aluminum for the outer chassis, an enhanced thermal graphite layer for heat management, and a Clad Metal used for the device’s internal rear structure.
nnnnThe metal plates supporting the display have been thinned to a thickness of about 0.2 mm, with small tips down to 0.15 mm in the thinnest sections. Samsung has also revised the hinge design to optimize load distribution across the entire device structure.
nnnnTo reach this result, Samsung analyzed around 270 major components and over 180 auxiliary parts of the device, achieving weight reductions of up to 0.001 grams on some elements. In the process, about 15 component types were eliminated entirely from the structure.
nnnnThe story is different for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which maintains a weight of 215 grams, unchanged from the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Ultra model, however, gains a 5,000 mAh battery, up from 4,400 mAh on the Z Fold 7, and a renewed camera setup: the main sensor remains at 200 MP but, for the first time in the Galaxy Z Fold series, the ultra-wide camera increases to 50 MP.
nnnnOn the thermal front, the graphite layer of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra increases in volume by 7% compared to that of the Z Fold 7.
