Motorola Signature 27 is becoming more and more interesting; it will be the brand’s first with GrapheneOS

For years, choosing to use GrapheneOS, the well-known privacy-focused operating system, imposed a stringent constraint: the requirement to purchase a Google Pixel device.

This exclusivity is about to end thanks to the recent unveiling of the Motorola Signature 27. The new flagship of the company is set to become the brand’s first smartphone to officially support the project, offering users a concrete and high-end alternative in the mobile security sector.

Motorola Signature 27 will support GrapheneOS

The news emerged in a very direct manner following the official launch of the smartphone. Responding to a user question on the X platform, the GrapheneOS team confirmed that the Signature 27 will be the first supported smartphone within their partnership with Motorola.

The message also invites waiting for official communications, a detail of great relevance since the exact timelines for the release of the support remain to be clarified and whether the company will decide to offer the operating system already pre-installed at the time of purchase.

The selection of this specific model is by no means random, but responds to precise technical needs. GrapheneOS had already indicated that the first Motorola devices supported would be high-end models, as only the more advanced Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms can provide the security standards and the extended support required.

The Motorola Signature 27 fully satisfies these criteria, being equipped with the processor Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

The manufacturer’s commitment to guaranteeing no fewer than 7 OS updates and up to 7 years of security patches aligns perfectly with the project’s requirements, which include advanced features such as hardware memory tagging and a solid integration of security elements.

This strategy follows GrapheneOS’s initial roadmap, which planned to start from a traditional device before expanding support to Motorola’s foldable models.

Software independence and detachment from Google

The moment this openness becomes real is particularly meaningful, given the growing frictions between the GrapheneOS team and Google. Recently, the project has faced various obstacles in adapting the system to the Pixel 11 due to MTE support.

In addition to criticisms aimed at the new manual processes required to access the Pixel driver source code and the accusations of a limited access to some APIs and Android 17 security fixes.

To prepare for a phase of reduced dependence on Pixels, GrapheneOS is actively working also on the software front. The team is revising the messaging app to include native RCS support, with the aim of reducing the burden of Google Messages, replacing the old AOSP apps and introducing new privacy features, such as secure clipboard management.

Today, for those who were waiting for a top-tier GrapheneOS smartphone without necessarily relying on Mountain View’s ecosystem, the wait is over. The Motorola Signature 27 is officially at the forefront.
