Huawei Mate XT 2 official: the return of the tri-fold, it’s the first foldable with Privacy Display

Huawei has officially unveiled in China Mate XT 2, the new generation of its tri-fold format smartphone: under the hood debuts the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, while the real novelty comes from the external display, which for the first time integrates a hardware privacy system capable of narrowing the viewing angle with a simple double tap.

On the design front, Mate XT 2 measures 12.3 mm thick when closed and only 3.5 mm when fully opened, thanks to a redesigned hinge. Compared to Mate XT and Mate XTs, we are looking at a design shift: instead of a single screen with a Z-fold, the flagship takes after Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold.

In this way Huawei has introduced a large internal foldable screen in two points and an external panel. The latter is protected by Kunlun basalt glass, which would guarantee (according to the company) 30 times higher drop resistance and 16 times higher scratch resistance.

The internal display measures 10,2″ with 3K resolution and a 12,8:9 aspect ratio, while the external screen is 6,5″ with 1.5K resolution and a peak brightness of up to 6,500 nits. The phone is available in black, white and purple, with an octagonal-shaped camera module.

After two tri-fold devices without IP rating, the company has introduced a more durable structure, with certification IP58 and IP59 (dust and water). This is the first tri-fold smartphone to achieve this level of protection (the Samsung model is IP48).

Lingdun: the first hardware privacy system integrated into a foldable display

The flagship feature of Mate XT 2 is Huawei’s Lingdun technology: the first hardware-level privacy system integrated directly into a foldable display.

The technology relies on independent dual pixels: a double tap on the external screen, or pressing the dedicated button, instantly narrows the viewing angle to prevent prying eyes from spying. It is similar to Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra’s Privacy Display, but on a foldable model.

Hardware

The new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset offers, according to Huawei, a 42% performance increase over the Mate XT, with a 24% improvement in single-core and 52% in multi-core.

The GPU introduces real-time ray tracing support and improves rendering performance by 142% over the previous generation. The Da Vinci NPU is instead able to run a Mixture of Experts model with 30 billion parameters in total, of which 2 billion are active.

Camera

The camera setup includes a 50 MP RYYB main sensor with variable aperture (f/1.49-4.0) and support for ultra-high dynamic range up to 18EV, a 50 MP RYYB telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and a 40 MP RYYB ultra-wide.

Completing the package is the third-generation Red Maple multispectral sensor, which Huawei claims would improve color accuracy by 95% over the previous model.

HarmonyOS 7, medical ECG certification and satellite messaging

Software-wise, Mate XT 2 runs HarmonyOS 7 with a split-screen layout designed specifically for the triple-fold configuration. The device also includes a Class II medical ECG certification: after opening the screen, simply hold the two sides of the frame with both hands for 30 seconds; the analysis software will generate an ECG report, indicating sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, ventricular extrasystoles and atrial extrasystoles (in adults).

Finally, the Balong modem adds satellite messaging support and would reduce by 25% the interruptions during video calls aboard high-speed trains compared to the previous model.
