Pixel Tablet disappears from Google’s store; will a replacement ever arrive?

The Google foray into the tablet market seems to have suffered a sudden and unexpected setback.

In recent days, the company has removed the Pixel Tablet from its official online store, while at the same time eliminating the entry dedicated to this specific product category from the main navigation menu.

The first signs of this withdrawal were intercepted by the Jetstream portal, which in the past few days had noted that the device was marked with the status “out of stock“. In a very short time, the situation escalated with the product’s total disappearance from the Google Store’s digital storefronts.

The decision to hide even the text link dedicated to tablets from the top bar of the homepage represents a strong signal, which analysts interpret as a true decommissioning.

Several American news outlets have contacted the company’s spokespersons to obtain official confirmations regarding the end of the product’s life cycle, but responses are slow to arrive.

Hard-to-find accessories and empty stock

Despite the main device having disappeared from the radar, the pages related to its official accessories are still visible on the site, although their actual availability is almost nil.

Products that were previously in high demand, such as the official case and the charging base with built-in speaker can no longer be purchased; interested users can only sign up for a waitlist to receive a notification in case of future, and now unlikely, restocks.

Currently, the only item that regularly appears to be purchasable is the Wasserstein Pixel Tablet Speaker Stand.

The gradual disappearance isn’t limited to Mountain View’s direct sales channel: even major external distributors have cut off supply. On Amazon the device is no longer for sale, while the famous Best Buy chain has updated the product page clearly stating that the item is no longer available as new.

The device’s history and doubts about the successor

The Pixel Tablet had been officially unveiled during Google I/O 2023. At launch, the company offered the device at a starting price of 719 euros, a figure made considerably more attractive by the inclusion in the box of the charging base with a speaker, an idea that allowed turning the device into a screen for the smart home.

From a hardware standpoint, the device offered mid-range specifications, not exciting the most demanding users and sticking to a 60 Hz display.

Today, the sudden unavailability of the product leaves a clear gap in the catalog. It remains to be seen whether this choice indicates the imminent arrival of an updated model, or whether it is an experiment terminated prematurely, without leaving any direct successor on the shelves.
