ChatGPT and Claude AI down together: what the reports say | September 3

In the afternoon of September 3, ChatGPT from OpenAI and Claude AI from Anthropic experienced outages within the same time window, as shown by reports collected by Downdetector. It is not clear whether the two issues are related or if this is simply a timing coincidence, since the two companies manage separate infrastructures.

ChatGPT and Claude AI down: the reports on Downdetector

The Downdetector Italy chart dedicated to OpenAI shows a peak of 2,097 reports at 16:39 (Italian time) on September 3, compared with a baseline of just 3 reports in the previous 24 hours: a sharp and sudden jump, appearing as a single vertical spike on the chart.

At the same time, the chart dedicated to Claude AI also records a peak, albeit smaller: 301 reports at 16:39, against a baseline of 2. The coincidence of the time of the two peaks is the most curious aspect of this incident, even though Downdetector alone cannot establish a common cause for the two outages.

The Claude AI official status panel: “Elevated errors for multiple models”

To confirm the problem on the Anthropic front, the service’s official status page also reports an incident titled “Elevated errors for multiple models”.

The update history details the evolution of the incident: at 15:26 the company announces that it is “in search of the cause of elevated errors” on requests to Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5; at 15:41 it states that it has identified the cause of the problem on the same three models.

At 15:50 the list of involved models broadens: the update speaks of an “exhaustive list of the models involved”, which includes Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8 and Opus 4.6, a broader range than the three named in the first two updates. The latest available update, at 16:49, is limited to confirming that the work to resolve the problem is still ongoing.

ChatGPT unavailable from both the app and the browser

Beyond the Downdetector numbers, the OpenAI outage can be felt firsthand on the official channels. From the mobile app, attempting to send a message, ChatGPT returns the error “There was a problem with your request”, accompanied by an internal request ID.

From a desktop browser the problem presents itself in a different but equally blocking form: when visiting chatgpt.com, an HTTP 404 error appears, with the message “Cannot find the chatgpt.com page”. A sign that the outage, in this case, affects not only message sending but the site’s very accessibility.

To confirm the issue, the official OpenAI status panel also reports “We’re currently experiencing issues” on two services: ChatGPT and Codex. The incident is under investigation; the outage also extends to Codex, OpenAI’s tool dedicated to code generation, and not only to the chatbot.
