The wait for Apple’s first foldable smartphone is coming to an end. According to recent information reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the Californian company is set to launch its new device, dropping the internal nomenclature iPhone Ultra, used internally in recent months.
The product will officially take the name iPhone Duo, a precise choice that underlines the dual-screen nature of the device. The latest revelations clearly define the prices, storage capacities and hardware features of the product, offering a substantial preview ahead of the event “Surprise and Shine” scheduled for today at 19:00, Italian time.
The initial estimates suggested an extremely high starting cost, rumored up to $2,500, but the company has structured a different pricing policy to stimulate consumer demand. The new iPhone Duo will start at $2,000 for the base model equipped with 256 GB of storage.
Despite the recent memory supply crisis pushing production costs beyond initial estimates, the company has chosen to absorb part of the costs to ensure a more accessible starting price.
Additional costs will instead be transferred to the higher-capacity versions, which will reach figures close to $3,000.
Market entry is expected for October and the device will be offered in white and dark blue colors. Although there were doubts about possible production delays, the gap between the foldable’s launch and that of the iPhone 18 Pro will be entirely marginal.
On the inside components front, the smartphone will be driven by the new A20 Pro processor integrated with the C2 proprietary modem. The camera setup is expected to be high-end, with a dual 48 MP rear camera and two 12 MP front cameras.
The folding mechanism will employ an innovative magnetic hinge system to ensure reliability and smoothness in movement. It is also confirmed the support for the Apple Pencil: the company has even tested a more compact version of the famous stylus designed specifically for this screen, though an immediate release seems rather unlikely.
The highly anticipated event today will not focus solely on the foldable model. The new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will also be unveiled, for which a price increase of around $100 is expected compared to their direct predecessors.
To complete the offering, there will be significant updates for wearables and the audio sector, with the official presentation of the Apple Watch Series 12, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and the new AirPods 5.
