The company behind Lei Jun has officially unveiled HyperOS 4, the brand’s new version of its proprietary interface for smartphones and tablets from Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO. The update introduces substantial performance improvements, a new visual language, and a significant evolution of AI-based features.
The announced features for now pertain to the Chinese version of HyperOS 4. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed full availability of these features on Global ROMs or in other regions, so we are awaiting the international event.
One of the main improvements concerns HyperCore, the low-level system optimization layer. With HyperOS 4, Xiaomi introduces a more precise workload calculation system, designed to reduce unnecessary processing.
According to the company, the total number of instructions is reduced by 14.4% compared to HyperOS 3. The goal is to reduce the workload required from CPU, memory and battery during daily activities such as opening apps, switching between screens and background process management.
The system also introduces a new AI-based memory preloading system. The software tries to anticipate which resources will be needed and pre-allocates RAM, freeing less important processes.
According to Xiaomi’s tests, after eight hours of use available memory increases by 27.2% compared to HyperOS 3.
The new memory management also speeds up opening apps. In a test with 30 apps launched in succession after nine hours of use, HyperOS 4 reduced times by 17.5%.
The Chinese company also reports a 28.9% reduction in frames lost during extended sessions. After nine hours of use, the average frame-drop rate measured was 0.22% on HyperOS 4 versus 1.61% on HyperOS 3.
A particularly noticeable improvement concerns the Gallery. In libraries with tens of thousands of thumbnails, the time required to reach the end of the collection would have been reduced by 90%.
On the battery life front, Xiaomi mentions a more modest gain: about 0.26 hours, equivalent to 15.6 minutes in internal tests.
The new graphic language is defined as Life Aesthetics and revolves around the visual material Soft Light Glass.
It isn’t a new physical display component, but a graphic system based on transparencies, soft reflections, blur, layered levels and dynamic lighting. Transparency changes according to the underlying content, while the lighting effects also follow some movements and gestures by the user.
The new style is applied to the lock screen, the home screen, the Control Center, folders, widgets and several system apps.
HyperOS 4 introduces a redesigned lock screen, with greater freedom in the arrangement of the clock and widgets. Notifications can be grouped into stacks, thus occupying less space and giving more visibility to the background.
On the home screen comes the widget overlay, folder editing via drag and drop, and new animations when moving items.
Also Control Center, Weather, File Manager, Contacts, Notes and Gallery receive graphical and interaction updates.
Xiaomi also revamps the panel dedicated to managing connected devices. The new version allows pinning the most frequently used products and quick switching between different homes.
HyperOS 4 also continues to develop HyperConnect, with features to control smartphones from a computer, share connectivity with tablets, use cameras from other devices and connect to iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows PC.
Among the novelties is also a feature for those using two Xiaomi smartphones with the same account, allowing synchronization of calls and SMS verification codes.
On the AI front, Super XiaoAI 2.0 debuts, based on Xiaomi MiMo models and, according to official metadata, on MiMo V2.5. The assistant moves from simple responses to more articulated requests, with the ability to operate across apps, devices, documents, calendar and smart home products.
One of the main features is Inspiration Ball, capable of interpreting what appears on the screen. It can recognize addresses, products, hours, images, chats, and posters, proposing contextual actions such as starting navigation, adding an event to the calendar, searching for a product, or editing a photograph using AI.
HyperOS 4 also expands HyperIsland, the area dedicated to real-time activities (using the space around the punch hole): this is a feature we already know well, a Xiaomi-style Dynamic Island.
Navigation, deliveries, transactions and other services can remain visible at the top of the screen while the user continues using another app.
Code and Number Island also debuts, which recognizes numbers, codes, QR codes, tickets and other information via a three-finger gesture, turning them into quick actions.
The Expert mode of Super XiaoAI 2.0 enables handling more complex multi-step requests. The assistant can combine personal content and online information to generate research reports, PowerPoint presentations, websites and videos.
AI features are also integrated into Recorder, Keyboard and Notes. The Recorder can recognize meetings, create summaries and outlines, while the Super XiaoAI keyboard can improve writing, rework text and translate between Chinese and English.
The features of Super XiaoAi 2.0 can continue across smartphones, tablets, Xiaomi PCs and Mac with Apple Silicon, with conversation handover, remote file recovery and continuity between devices.
For operation the same Xiaomi account, connection to the same network and compatible versions of the services are required.
HyperOS 4 also introduces new measures related to how data is used by AI. Xiaomi speaks of an end-to-end cloud processing system designed so that data is used only to fulfill the user’s request.
More sensitive operations, such as modifying, deleting, or sending data externally, require confirmation. There are also tools to control which information can be automatically stored by the AI and to delete those already remembered.
The first Chinese beta of HyperOS 4 has been announced for the following models:

Xiaomi has not yet announced a calendar for international betas. Not all features will reach all models as they will depend on device hardware.
For example, the company specifies that the full Soft Light Glass experience is expected mainly for devices with Snapdragon 8 Elite or newer platforms, Dimensity 9500 or newer and XRING O1 processors or newer.
Also some AI features, the advanced lock screen effects, Expert Mode and Inspiration Ball will be limited to certain models.
HyperOS 4 represents therefore a very broad update, but the actual availability of individual functions will vary by device, region and software version. At this point there is nothing left but to await further details, both regarding compatibility and global availability.
