This time the victim is the ‘butler’, Google Assistant will stop working in September

The era of Mountain View’s historic voice assistant comes to an end. Starting from September 2026, Google Assistant will officially stop functioning on smartphones, tablets and various connected accessories, making way for Gemini, the company’s new artificial intelligence model.

The definitive transition, which has shifted relative to the initial 2025 deadline, closes the doors to the past for good, disabling the option to restore the old service.

Farewell Google Assistant, here’s when it will stop functioning

In recent hours, Mountain View’s giant has begun informing its users through official email communications, confirming that the farewell of the famous voice assistant is imminent.

The deactivation process will begin on 4 September 2026, although the company has stated that update operations will take a few weeks to cover the totality of globally active profiles.

The measure does not involve only smartphones, but extends to a wide ecosystem of everyday-use products. The smartwatches based on the Wear OS operating system, the headphones and the infotainment systems in the cars that use Android Auto via direct projection from the smartphone will also be affected by this interruption.

Once access is definitively removed, there will be no way to go back. Until now, the Gemini app had allowed even the most nostalgic to maintain a hybrid approach, offering the option to manually select the old assistant as the default option via the voice command “Switch to Google Assistant” in the settings.

This workaround will be closed for good in September.

Gemini’s Definitive Rise

The California-based company’s aim is to consolidate the presence of its generation-defining AI across all major platforms.

Company leaders have expressed strong confidence about the impact of this mandatory transition, assuring customers that Gemini will offer much more mature, integrated and useful support for everyday activities.

Additionally, basic actions will be received and managed in a much more conversational and natural way by the new voice assistant.

The formal postponement of the shutdown, which originally set the deadline for Q4 2025, has given developers the time needed to refine the code, addressing functional uncertainties and optimizing response times before unplugging the previous infrastructure.

Temporary Exceptions and Domestic Expansion

Despite the decision to retire smartphones and tablets, there remains a specific category of products that will keep the original software alive, at least for now.

Vehicles with the native system “Google built-in“, i.e., physically integrated into the car’s architecture and entirely detached from the driver’s smartphone, will continue to use the usual virtual assistant without restrictions even after the critical date.

For the rest of the market, the official statement takes a cautious approach and does not provide exact dates. The living-room entertainment devices in the Google TV line, the speakers of the Home series and the smart displays will receive the Gemini upgrade in the coming months, but distribution timelines remain guarded.

A similar wait-and-see approach applies to the Pixel Tablet when docked on its charging base. The company is proceeding with measured steps to avoid nasty surprises for buyers, ensuring a gradual and safe handover across the entire hardware catalog.
