Spotify becomes a ChatGPT-style AI assistant: here’s how it works

Through an official press release, the new feature Talk to Spotify has been announced: for the moment it is a beta version feature available only to some users and in certain countries. However the Swedish company has chosen to preview its potential: the service aims to transform the music streaming app into an AI assistant with which to interact to discover new tracks and audiobooks.

AI is everywhere nowadays and Spotify is no exception: in the past days a link with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, emerged, albeit limited to the Android XR platform (dedicated to mixed reality).

But with the “Talk to Spotify” feature we are not dealing with an integration, but with a real transformation: the application stops being a music player and becomes a conversational AI, via the dedicated button.

In this way the user can access an interactive assistant for music, podcasts and audiobooks, a dedicated ChatGPT specialized in these fields and present exclusively in app (for Android and iOS).

The app is controlled via an AI chatbot

AI is capable of having continuous and contextual conversations: it can analyze listening sessions to provide real-time data and offer suggestions on tracks, authors, and audiobooks. However this is not an informational chat but it is possible to fully replace traditional on-screen navigation.

The AI assistant can manage the library and Spotify commands: it is possible to play songs, add them to a playlist, queue them, and even follow new artists. Talk to Spotify allows you to control the app via an AI chatbot and, at the same time, to have an assistant to interact with to discover information about artists, songs, albums and more.

For now it is still in beta

The listening experience becomes more personal, since the assistant knows the user’s tastes. At the moment the service is in a testing phase for the beta version, only for Premium plan subscribers in the United States, Ireland and Sweden. For now it remains limited, so users will have to wait for the stable release for everyone.
