Honor has announced additional details on the soon-to-be-imminent Robot Phone, one of the most innovative smartphones in recent years. During a dedicated imaging technology event held in China, the company confirmed the device’s launch for the 12 August, unveiling at the same time all the details of the collaboration with ARRI.
The new smartphone not only focuses on high-end specifications, but introduces a completely new approach to photography and, above all, mobile videography, thanks to an integrated robotic gimbal and software technologies developed together with the renowned German manufacturer.
The main novelty of Honor Robot Phone is represented by the mechanical stabilization system integrated directly into the imaging module.
The main sensor is indeed mounted on a three-axis gimbal, powered by a motor weighing just 2.6 grams. Despite the extremely compact dimensions, Honor asserts that this solution offers a torque density about 35% higher than traditional motors, while being 65% smaller.
The entire system is based on a multitude of technologies, translating into over 100 patents, and it is designed to deliver professional-level stabilization without the need for external gimbals.
The camera section is one of the device’s most important elements. Robot Phone indeed integrates a 200 MP main sensor mounted on the gimbal, with a 1/1.28″ size and an f/1.6 aperture; accompanying it we find a 50 MP ultra-wide and a periscope telephoto lens, also 200 MP.
To process the data load, Honor has developed the new Yuguang H1, a proprietary processor dedicated exclusively to imaging. The chip works together with the AiMAGE 2.0 engine, which manages in real time:
The goal is to obtain smooth footage and high-quality photos directly on the device, without resorting to external processing.
After the official previews in recent months, Honor has finally revealed all the details of the partnership with ARRI, the German company that produces some of Hollywood’s most-used cinema cameras. Thanks to this collaboration, Robot Phone introduces features normally reserved for professional cameras, including:
Honor has also announced the creation of a joint Honor-ARRI laboratory, dedicated to developing future technologies for computational photography and color science.
Honor has also confirmed that the imaging innovations developed for Robot Phone will not stay exclusive to this model.
The imaging technologies developed together with ARRI will also be extended to the brand’s future flagships, including the upcoming Magic 9 series, indicating that the collaboration is a long-term project.
The official launch event is scheduled for August 12, where all technical details and the selling price will be unveiled. According to leaks, it will be a hefty price tag, and it is highly likely that the phone will remain a Chinese-exclusive.
