Starting next week there will be other app stores on the Google Play Store

The complex legal dispute between Google and the well-known video game company Epic Games has come to an end, bringing with it an important change.

From July 22, 2026, US users will witness an absolute novelty for Android devices, as the California-based company has been compelled to allow the inclusion of alternative digital stores directly within its own Play Store.

This move ends the long legal controversy, establishing new rules for software distribution and outlining greater freedom of choice for consumers and developers, thus marking the end of a de facto monopoly on the platform.

From the early stages of the dispute, one of Epic Games’ main requests concerned not only opening Android to external markets, but the actual hosting of such platforms within Google’s official store.

After a strong initial resistance to resist this obligation, the company ultimately chose to abandon its battle and give up on modifying the injunction issued by the US court.

In a formal statement, the corporate leaders confirmed that they had reached a settlement to withdraw the motion, preferring to avoid prolonging a case that would have wasted money.

The company explained that this decision allows focusing all efforts on evolving the global business model, offering lower rates and at the same time ensuring a consistently high level of security, in full compliance with the judge’s expressed provisions.

Shared distribution mechanisms

The new setup imposes very precise rules for the integration of apps and games. Alternative markets will have the ability to include in their catalogs the titles present on Google’s official platform, being able to transparently show names, icons, descriptions, and various multimedia contents provided by the software creators.

Although developers have the right to oppose and deny this sharing of their product pages, the standard option provides that download procedures are nonetheless completed through Mountain View’s infrastructure.

This means that the contractual terms will remain unchanged and the usual service fees will continue to be applied to all installations made via these intermediary channels.

Economic conditions and security standards

The opening to competitors will not happen without imposing rigorous control measures and clear geographic limits.

To access this integration, operators of external platforms will have to pay an annual access fee of $5,000, a sum explicitly required to cover the costs of policy and security reviews. This initiative will remain strictly limited to the territory of the United States of America.

Third-party distributors will also be required to comply with very strict criteria: they must adopt clear, non-discriminatory security policies, keep their systems open to any eligible developer, and strictly prohibit the distribution of apps outside U.S. soil.

Finally, to protect consumers, external platforms must guarantee and empirically demonstrate that less than 1% of installation attempts contain malicious code or malware, ensuring a consistently reliable and protected experience.
