Goodbye ChatGPT Atlas: the AI browser lasted less than a year

OpenAI reshuffles the deck in its ecosystem with a move that marks the end of an experiment that lasted only a few months. The company has officially confirmed the closure of ChatGPT Atlas, the standalone browser built to navigate the web with the help of artificial intelligence, to bet everything on a deeply redesigned and more powerful desktop application. The decision will take effect from the upcoming August 9.

Instead of continuing to develop Atlas as an independent product, OpenAI has chosen to transfer its browsing capabilities directly into the new ChatGPT desktop app, which now combines Codex and the specific functions of ChatGPT Work into a single interface.

The new version of the application promises a much more robust user experience, similar to that of traditional browsers, thanks to the introduction of support for multiple tabs, an integrated password manager, and the form autofill feature.

In this way, users can compare information from different sources, access Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 files, and manage complex workflows without ever having to switch applications.

Alongside the enhancement of the desktop app, OpenAI is launching a new Google Chrome extension. With a dedicated sidebar, you will be able to summarize web pages, ask specific questions about the displayed texts, and complete tasks leveraging the power of ChatGPT and Codex directly within Google Chrome.

The Atlas experiment lasted only 9 months, but it isn’t a failure. Users who tested the browser since its debut in October 2025 have provided crucial feedback to shape the new unified experience. Simply put, OpenAI views AI navigation as a system feature rather than as an autonomous product intended to compete with Chrome.
