The spread of camera-equipped smart glasses has raised increasingly urgent concerns about personal privacy.
Until a few months ago, only Android users could defend themselves proactively through dedicated apps; today, even iPhone users have at their disposal a specific tool to safeguard their privacy.
Its name is AntiZuck, a clear reference to Meta’s founder, and it presents itself as a digital shield capable of intercepting signals emitted by smart glasses in the immediate vicinity, giving the user greater awareness of who is around them.
Available on the App Store at the price of €2.99, the application acts as a true presence detector.
The software performs a continuous scan of Bluetooth signals associated with the main smart glasses on the market, including the well-known Meta Ray-Ban, the Snap Spectacles, the Echo Frames by Amazon and the RayNeo, with the promise to expand the hardware database soon.
The graphical interface presents itself as a real-time radar, providing an approximate estimate of the distance to the detected device and a measure of the reliability of the signal.
The system has been designed to deeply integrate with Apple’s operating system: it offers practical widgets for the lock screen and the Home screen, a quick toggle in the Control Center, and the possibility to assign the scanning controls directly to the iPhone’s Action Button.
To avoid false alarms, it is also possible to store repeated sightings and mark familiar devices, excluding them from the annoying local notifications.
The detection mechanism is entirely based on reading Bluetooth transmissions broadcast in the environment. However, an important limitation should be noted: the program cannot determine with absolute certainty whether the person wearing the glasses is actually recording a video or taking a photo without our knowledge.
Its operation focuses exclusively on detecting signals broadcast by compatible hardware at specific moments of activity, for example during the phase of power-on, pairing with a smartphone or opening the charging case.
Independent tests have shown that Meta’s glasses can even disappear from the scanner temporarily as soon as they stop actively transmitting the wireless signal.
Moreover, the same technology can identify other devices from the same company, such as the Quest VR headsets. This means that a positive alert on the smartphone screen does not necessarily correspond to the presence of a hidden camera pointed at us.
Whoever develops privacy-oriented software must lead by example, and the author seems to have respected this golden rule: every calculation and detection operation occurs entirely locally on the smartphone, the application does not require creating any account, does not show ads, and does not collect any sensitive personal information.
This iOS initiative follows the path already traced last February by independent developer Yves Jeanrenaud, who had released for Android the free application Nearby Glasses.
Based on Bluetooth Low Energy identifiers, that open-source alternative quickly surpassed 100,000 downloads on the Google Play Store, demonstrating strong public interest in these new defense tools.
