Buying the next flagships will be a disaster, here are all the Snapdragon chips expected

Choosing a high-end smartphone could soon become a particularly challenging undertaking for consumers.

The recent rumors circulating on Chinese social networks, in particular through the well-known informant Digital Chat Station, indicate that Qualcomm‘s strategy for upcoming generations of processors is much more intricate than initially hypothesized.

It will not be merely a linear transition from one series to another, but a true overlap of models, variants and reissues that will populate the specifications of premium devices, potentially causing confusion among less attentive buyers.

The leaked information confirms that the American company is preparing the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family, which will presumably be organized into two main declinations: a standard version and a Pro variant.

Both solutions will use the 2 nm manufacturing process developed by TSMC, ensuring energy efficiency and top-tier performance. The technical differentiation between the two models, however, will be fairly pronounced.

The Pro version should integrate the custom CPU Oryon, paired with a powerful Adreno 850 GPU, a larger cache memory and support for the blazing-fast RAM LPDDR6. By contrast, the standard version will probably rely on a Adreno 845 GPU and will maintain compatibility with the memories LPDDR5X.

This internal segmentation within the same high-end tier calls for a careful assessment of the technical specifications before purchasing a new device, as the performance differences could be significant.

Unreleased versions and extended lifecycle

Beyond the sixth-generation hardware, the leaked roadmap reveals the existence of unexpected components that will further expand the commercial offering. Indeed, a processor identified as Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Pro, known internally by the technical code SM8845 Pro, emerges.

Since the designation SM8845 corresponds to the base Gen 5 platform, it becomes evident the manufacturer’s intention to extend the commercial life of the previous architecture, introducing an enhanced version rather than retire it definitively.

Keeping silicon from older generations on the market isn’t entirely foreign to the commercial logic of the San Diego-based company, which has often reintroduced proven hardware to fill specific price niches.

What makes the situation even more intricate is the appearance of a mysterious Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5XX Edition. The use of the term “XX Edition” has no immediate precedent in the brand’s recent nomenclature and leaves room for numerous speculations about the actual characteristics that will distinguish this chip from the regular 5-series.

Towards a highly fragmented market

The current indications, while requiring the usual caution as not yet official from the company’s leadership, outline a very clear scenario.

The lineup of processors for flagship Android smartphones is set to undergo a significant fragmentation. Users will no longer have to limit themselves to choosing between the Elite labels and base versions, but will be asked to interpret a dense network of Pro editions, special variants and overlapping generations.

If these plans come to fruition in the coming months, identifying the exact hardware configuration of your preferred smartphone will require very specific attention, making the technical analysis a fundamental phase of the purchasing process.
