In recent months there has been much talk about foldable smartphones in a wide format, i.e., characterized by a screen wider than traditional devices. The latest rumors from China suggest that this particular form factor might not be limited to the foldable category but could also find space on traditional phones. A significant novelty that could completely change how we perceive phones.
The wide-format wins over everyone and doesn’t need a foldable screen: here’s how the next Huawei Pura will look
According to a well-known Chinese insider, Huawei is reportedly working on a smartphone from the Pura series with a display in 16:10. Not a foldable, but a standard phone with a display of 6.4″ diagonal.
The device would have made a good impression on the leaker Digital Chat Station, thanks also to a slim and light design. The camera system would rely on a 50 MP sensor with a size of 1/1,3″, accompanied by a periscopic 50 MP telephoto lens and a multispectral sensor for color fidelity. There would also be an ultra-wide angle but details are lacking.
On the autonomy side, there are rumors of a capacious 7,000 mAh battery; the new smartphone would be powered by a Kirin 9-series chipset, so we would be dealing with a flagship.
The launch is expected by the end of the year, perhaps shortly after the Mate 90 series presentation (expected in October). A curiosity: OPPO would also have a ready wide non-foldable prototype, so it seems we will indeed be dealing with a new category.
Pura X, Pura X Max e il futuro dei pieghevoli wide
The Chinese tech giant has already launched two wide foldables: Huawei Pura X, the first experiment, is a flip phone with an internal 16:10 screen; recently the company announced Pura X Max, a book-form variant, with two displays (internal and external) in a 4:3.
In both cases the final result is a phone with a display wider than usual, a solution more akin to a small tablet – with benefits in terms of usability and multitasking.
If you have doubts about the wide format, know that Samsung and Apple don’t: the upcoming Galaxy Fold 8 and iPhone Ultra (Cupertino’s first foldable) will adopt this very design, particularly suited for foldable devices.
